Dave, a UK rerun station, has just shown the first of 3 exclusive new episodes of Red Dwarf.
After seeing the first one, I’m cautiously optimistic. It’s better than the last 2 series, although no real belly laughs. I may have missed the first few seconds, was there an explanation as to how it went back to business as normal after the ending of Series 8?
Yeah, it wasn’t brilliant but it was essentially a reunion special so I can’t complain about that. It hit the notes that fans would want and if it is the worst of the three episodes then the other two will be pretty good.
I enjoyed it. It does feel a little ‘off’ but it’s still recognisable Red Dwarf. Rimmer seems less smarmy and more depressed. His angry face looked genuinely angry as opposed to his usual comedy-angry, I think he’s changed the most, we’ll see what he’s like in the next two episodes. Kryten used some vocabulary that seemed out-of-place. I hope they restore some happiness to Lister, he seemed rather sad, which I attribute to the loss of Kochanski. Cat was the best I think. Overall it just feels like it’s lost a little of it’s light-heartedness. The scene in the diving-bell was great (except Rimmer). I loved the bit with Dave, the tentacle and the knife between his teeth.
No prizes for guessing who he brings back from Earth (assuming they return)? It can only be one person, surely, but which actress?
I’m glad we only have to wait a day until the next episode. I think I’d explode if I had to wait a week…
It exceeded my expectations, but they had been really low to begin with. The storyline was interesting, but the humour was a bit sparse - a laughter track would have helped, odd as that may sound. I’m looking forward to the next one now.
Oh no! I hadn’t thought of that! One of the things I was happiest about in this episode was the lack of Kochanski!
In fairness to the people at ‘Dave’, although about 95% of their output is repeats, they do have a very small amount of original programming such as the ‘Argumental’ game show (which does actually have some merit and is quite funny on occasion).
Oh, I agree Argumental is a great show, and I wasn’t knocking Dave for being mostly repeats BZZ but let’s face it how hard is it to just pick up some BBC programs and claim to be an original channel? **BZZ **Really hard, that’s how much, especially with the excellent choices they make in program selections BZZ, like “Traffic Cops”:dubious:
You’re kidding; I thought it was really funny. Everything from the conversation on the bus to the whole concept of the episode. I’d have ranked this as a ‘good’ episode even in the heyday. Even the Space Corps directive bit which was never funny in any previous series, they managed to get a decent laugh from.
I didn’t like the concept of the episode. The whole
they’re not real
thing just did not click with me at all. I felt it came across like badly written fanfic. So I must confess that this did effect my opinion of the episode as a whole.
I didn’t like the way the episode was going at the start. It looked like they were breaking the 'third wall ’ too much. The whole scene with the DVDs and mentioning Dave just made me cringe. As the episode continued though I started to like it more and more. It’s an alternate universe, it’s probably not the strangest adventure they’ve been on. The bit where Rimmer pushed the hologram in front of the car made me laugh out loud though, something I’ve not done in a long time…
Does anyone else think they might announce a new series in the last episode? I feel they’re building up to it, that might just be wishful thinking though.
It seems unlikely. After all they’ve already given most of the details of “Series 9” away, which they probably wouldn’t do if there actually was going to be one.
I’ve only watched a couple eps over the years and had to go read up on the characters. Anyway, I liked this ep well enough. Kinda long winded at times, but the free flowing Bladerunner references were amusing.
Have to say that I thought the first episode was okay (though irritating that they’ve just dumped the cliff-hanger from series 8). The second episode was the worst Dwarf episode I’ve ever seen. And I include all of series 7 in that.
