This is really driving me crazy…I hope someone can help. I can’t seem to find any info through Google & Norton website and phone help was useless…
I have Norton Internet Security 2004 and, by accident, Norton Anti-Virus 2004 both loaded on my computer. The Anti-Virus portion has expired but I don’t think it’s related to my problem.
Here is the problem:
Whenever I start my computer, a red tint appears on my screen for anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour or more before it finally goes away.
I believe that the problem is related to the Norton software because many, many months ago I did find a forum letter on the Norton website with the same problem. I tried whatever that solution was to no avail and just gave up.
Recently, I’ve tried disabling the software with no change.
Has anyone else had this problem, was it related to Norton, and how did you make it go away?
Also, Instead of renewing my software subscription with Norton, should I get something else for protection against hackers, for firewall protection, and for anti-virus protection?
Change your monitor. Is it a CRT? I find it rather unlikely that Norton would be messing with your display quality, so the first action should be to borrow a spare known good monitor and plug it in. If that fixes it, you’re in the market for a new monitor.
I’d be interested in reading that forum item, if you could locate and link it. Personally, I think your monitor is displaying the beginning signs of checking out. CRT monitors use electron beam guns to excite red, green, and blue phosphor dots and create all the colors you see on the screen. When one of the screen/drive controls stays on all of the time, it’s red dot overload until the the circuitry comes alive and unhoses things. My old monitor took a trip to the Emerald Isle while I was sleeping and made every day St. Patrick’s Day. Unless it’s a really large monitor, repair likely exceeds replacement value.
The popular wisdom I’ve been hearing is the AVG antivirus with firewall protection is the cat’s pants, and also isn’t the resource hog that Norton is. Patiently awaiting my current subscription to expire, and then it’s off to AVG.
I appreciate the answers but I’m not convinced it’s a monitor issue.
The red tint goes away after a little bit…If it were a monitor problem, wouldn’t it stay on permanently?
Regarding the Norton angle, I did theorize that the software was causing the red tint somehow during its automatic scans and such on computer start-up.
Also, I’ve read of other complaints against Norton and assumed that it has something to do with this.
As lizardling advised-substitute a different but known good monitor. That’s the quick and easy method.
CRT monitors share many of the same components with CRT televisions, and ‘intermittant’ problems can make you crazy, if you’re the tech trying to fix it. Are you turning your monitor (and/or entire computer) off at night, and the red tint only shows up at the beginning of the day?
Not necessarily. Thermal problems can either cause a problem to appear when the device begins to heat up, or the exact opposite. If you want to be sure, try the monitor on a completely different computer. Alternatively, you could try a different monitor with this computer. My money’s on a monitor problem, as well.
Had a bad monitor several years ago that displayed the exact same signs before going off. In my case, it was the red component crapping out, so everything would turn green and blue on me…
