Redundant Thread Names

Other than being really, really stupid… And probably a great way to get in hot water (ie: Banned)… And of course, if someone were to do it, they would just be a big jerk-face and a baby…

Enough disclaimer, now the question

Is ther anything in the system that keeps people from using the same thread title over and over? (Not counting accidental double posts)

If nineteen Dopers felt the need to start independent threads titled “Ibbity Bibbity Pop”, (or if a single Doper needed to start several different threads, and wanted to name them all “Bob’s Your Uncle” (and then they all had different OP’s)…) would the system catch it, or would it fall to the Mods?
-Rue. (who’s just curious, not planning to do something spectacularly stupid and get banned over it)

If someone were to vomit on the boards like that, I’m afraid we moderators would have to head to the broom closet for VoBan and mops to clean up the mess. The software doesn’t care what text is in the title.

And yes, you are correct. Doing something like this would show shockingly bad judgment. That person would move right to the top of our shitlist.

All threads are given a unique ID number in the database. For instance, if you look at the URL line of this thread, you will see it is:

http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=86457

which tells you that the “true” name of this thread is really “86457”, not “Redundant Thread Names”.

Thanks UncleBeer, sir. Did I mention I was just curious? (And how stupid would someone have to be to try this now? Since this thread is a sort of red flag and all…) And said idiot would get on a list? I figured they’d be beat with sticks and dumped in a ditch for dead.

Anthracite, I sorta knew that, but not really. I did notice the names of threads don’t show up in the link. But that’s as far as I thought about it. (Retorical question: Why would the software care what the name is? It’s all 1’s and 0’s to it anyway.)

Well, the software does check to prevent duplicate User names, even though we all really are going by a User ID #. So it is a very valid question. However, the logistics of running a query on every thread made to compare titles is probably somewhat daunting, compared to just comparing the much smaller number of User names.

It’s a really bad list.

There was a moment when three threads titled “Moderator” were on the front page of the BBQ pit. One (I believe the third) was started by yours truly (xanakis started the other two). I thought pretty hard about doing it, but the fact that xanakis kept going after the mods and couldn’t come up with a better thread title was irresistable. I strongly suspect though, that I “got away” with it because of the circumstances. I believe that if someone were to do the same thing with the intent of disturbing discussion, etc, the mods would come down hard.

(Ummm…Unc: I’m not on the top of the Shitlist for that, am I?)

Fenris

Naw, you aren’t on any kind of shitlist, Fenris. I was speaking about a single individual starting multiple threads, which is nothing like what you are worried about.

Heck, just look around this here forum. I don’t think I ever remember a time when there weren’t at least two threads called “test” on the front page of ATMB at once. We’ve also had a few cases in GQ of two people asking nearly identical questions at nearly the same time (in one case, both threads were at three pages before anyone even noticed that there were two of them!). It’s not necessarily malicious, although if they were all started by the same person, that’d be a problem.

Shoves pile of crap aside

May I assume that the, um, inspirational threads have been deleted? It certainly appears that way.
