Since I was first connected, I have been involved in the Madonna online community. I started at dotmusic. I stuck around while other posters came and went, made friends with the other “old timers”, and had a lovely time. Then dotmusic was overrun by the unwashed, and we all moved to Madonnarama, hosted by our friend Teddy. This was where I became kung fu lola, began writing satiric sketches called “The Adventures of Madge and Wallaby”, and basked, just feeling the love.
When I was cut off from being on the computer by my sadistic stepmother, I lost touch with everyone.
But now I am back, with my own place and my own computer, so I drop in to madonnachat to have a little fun. Someone calling themselves “Hello”, who types in all caps, is asking SO DO YOU THINK MADONNA IS EXPECTING? I decide to do classic kung fu lola and say something funny; like “Well no one knows if she is expecting, but it would be nice if she had another child. Then her legitimate children would outnumber her bastards.” and I put a winkie beside it ;).
No one got the joke. They all started typing in caps and saying; “If I had the power, I would throw you out of this room”. I don’t judge Madonna for having kids out of wedlock. I know she loved Carlos very much, and I also know that she didn’t plan to get pregnant. Saying something like that is only insulting if you really care whether or not Madonna’s kids are bastards. I don’t, and I find it strange that other young, hip, “with-it” people do. I understand that what I said was shocking IF you thought I was serious, but I put a winkie there and I also explained myself when they first reacted negatively. They just ignored me after that and after one of the people I had previously liked said; “Will someone please bounce this creep”, I clicked off.
It was hard to confront that after having so many friends who would have taken what I said, in the spirit in which it was meant. If I had said that on the old Madonnarama board, everyone would have laughed and said things like; “Oh no, Madonna NOT having bastards! Now we’ll all have to raise our moral standards!”
Oh, how the mighty have fallen.
