Religious Dopers: How Observant Are You?

How often do you attend services at your respectives places of worship?

I play bass and sing in the church choir.

I almost never attend services because I don’t believe in organized religion, so most of the times I’ve been in church have been for funerals/memorial services and Christmas services, but I pray every day.

Matthew 6:2 And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others.

I play keys in the worship band, and my wife sings in the band. (Usually on different weekends, as we have 4 small kids.)

I voted once a week, even though we have weekend services on Saturday and Sunday except during the summer, so when I’m playing, I’ll be there 2 days.

They’re surprisingly easy to sneak up on, actually…

I go to Shabbat and festival services, study nights and occasional classes 2-3 times a week. I consider those all equally important in my religious life, so I ticked “more than once a week”.

why?

I sing bass in the church choir. I will admit, though, that if I were not doing that, I would go far less often.

Kind of a Christian-oriented poll, isn’t it? Other religions may define how observant one is in other ways besides attending services.

For instance, I go to synagogue maybe 5 times a year, but I also keep kosher, and do a *kabbalat shabbat *every Friday night. As a result, I consider myself moderately observant, despite my avoidance of communal prayer.

I answered “every week,” because I do go every Sunday. I also go to occasional meetings in the middle of the week, but meetings targeted at my interests/demographics aren’t offered every week. If they were (like the Wednesday bible studies they had at the church I used to go to), I would go. When you belong to a minority religion, it is comforting to be with people who share your beliefs as much as you can.

Yes, I just sort of mentally skipped over the question in the title and answered the one in the OP, since they are two different questions.

These are two entirely different questions-which one did you mean to ask?

I didn’t vote, since I’m an atheist, but when I was religious, I attended more than once a week. Of course, part of that time, I was in seminary, so it was both expected and extremely convenient. Even so, I attended the chapel services more regularly than most people and also attended the chapel at American University, which was next door. Corporate worship was by far the most significant and enjoyable aspect of religion for me. Private prayer and contemplative bible study were always much more of an effort for me. I even kept attending services for quite a while after I became an atheist because I enjoyed it, but eventually the cognitive dissonance became too great, and I couldn’t enjoy it any more, so I stopped.

I attend worship services each Sunday. I used to attend the special services during the week, but am no longer able to attend the night services since I no longer drive at night. :frowning:

I keep kosher, wear a yarmulke, say a number of daily prayers but attend services almost never. Even on the High Holy Days, I just use a book at home.

I agree with others that the question in the title is a different question than the one in the OP.

Well often “religiously observant” means basically “how often do you attend religious services”? At least that’s how statistically its measured.

Another public poll, are you compiling a data base on dopers? :dubious:

I’m an atheist, so there is no choice for me in the poll.

Back in the day I was an alter boy so I was in church at least once a week for a short while. A few years later we (my mother, brother & myself) lived at a homeless shelter run by a baptist church and attendance was mandatory for bible study and services. Also meals were served in the church basement. Then for about two years I attended a gay church almost weekly. Since then (mid 80’s) I have only been in a church a few times.

I’m not counting the weekly ritual blood sacrifices that I went to during the 90’s as that was a social event.:stuck_out_tongue:

I go to church most weeks, skip occasionally.

I put “some weeks” as I’ve been traveling constantly lately and I doubt the pastor would recognize me anymore! But I do go when I’m in town or visiting my parents.

I wanted to answer Every Week, since I’m in the choir and fairly active. But I do sometimes have to skip a Sunday because I have to work, or when I am out of town visiting friends or family. But I rarely skip just to skip.
