I disliked Hitchens and Falwell equally, but for different reasons. Neither should be an untouchable sacred cow, in my opinion.
Would you be offended if I said a quick prayer to thank God that most atheists aren’t oversensitive fucktards like you?
Sorry… just testing the moderator limits on this forum…
If I said on this BBQ Pit section that someone, either a poster here or a public person, like a politician, that they are a scum fucking piece of human excrement because of what they said… would it be a reason for me to be banned?
Thanks for your great forum!
Falwell was a bigot, a fanatic and a monster who tried to convince Reagan to start a nuclear war to fulfill his idea of Biblical prophecy, and who wasn’t afraid of such a war because he thought that he and the few True Believers would be sucked into Heaven before the bombs hit. Hitchens as far as I can tell was mainly guilty of irritating some people. There’s no comparison.
You’re lying, of course, but that is no surprise.

No, but having the secret code name “Stinky” will usually do it.
Watching Christians get pissed at non-believers is even funnier when you realize they are angry because they are insecure in their own faith.
Lying about which part? Falwell was demonstrably a bigot. “Monster” is subjective, I’ll give you that. The guy wrote an entire book about how the Second Coming of Christ would coincide with a global nuclear war. You can find it on Amazon if you don’t believe me. The title is “Nuclear War and the Second Coming of Christ.”
Lying about trying “to convince Reagan to start a nuclear war”.

Watching atheists get pissed off at the thought that someone, whether friend, family, or acquaintance, might say a prayer for them, a prayer that said atheist may be completely unaware is being said, is pretty funny on its own, too. Hey, if my friends want to offer positive thoughts (to me, it’s a prayer, they may call it something else) to Yahweh, Allah, the Flying Spaghetti Monster, or their Pet Rock, and I’m unaware of them, how exactly am I hurt by it, especially if I don’t know about it?
Then again, I’m one of those liberal Christians who believes that God shows Himself in many forms, is a loving God, and what may be my path in life isn’t the same as anyone else’s. I grew up as a Christian, but only recently rediscovered my own faith after 20 years away, and prayer is a solace to me now. I may pray for friends who have different beliefs than I do, but not because I want to convert them to Christianity, it’s because the majority of the time, they’re in need of comfort, so that’s what I pray for them, in addition to helping them other ways that they need it. And I don’t feel the need to inform them that I’m praying for them, I just do it. And in some cases, it’s a way to combat my own feelings of helplessness when it’s a situation where there’s really nothing else I can do or say for them - I need to do something.
If I were put in a room with both Hitchens and Falwell, not knowing who they were, and told to talk about religion with them, I’d be willing to bet that I’d have gotten more out of talking to Hitchens than to Falwell. Would I change my mind about my faith after talking to him? Definitely not. But I share some of his distrust in organized religion (which sounds like a contradiction to my faith, but isn’t - I found a loving, welcoming, nurturing church where I not only learn, but can ask the hard questions and debate and discuss them with other members without fear of condemnation or ridicule), and I agree with a number of his ideas. With Falwell, his radical use of religion to promote hate, along with how black-and-white his vision of God was, would anger the hell out of me probably as soon as we started talking.
And even though my atheist friends and I may not agree on the existence of God, we can discuss it without getting nasty, and while we may judge others, it’s not on the basis of religion - we just believe that some people are assholes, no matter what religion they are or aren’t. An asshole can decide that he believes in God and still be an asshole - and it still won’t help him win Survivor.
It sounds like Mr Falwell didin’t read his Bible. In it Jesus is quoted as saying: He would come in his Father’s Glory with his angels while some of them standing there listening to him would still be alive;,he never did, and there is no record of such, that would have been far better than coming from the grave and not even his close friends recognized him!
One person said that John saw him (in Revalations), when he was in his 90’s,but John was not just some of the people, there had to be many or at least several that would have witnessed such an event, and would surely cause a great deal of excitement! Just as Jesus also predicted the end of the world in that generation. Some teach it didn’t mean in that generation, but the same word for generation was also used (by Matthew) that there was 14 generations between David and Jesus.
