I don’t know if this happens in other forums here, but in the game threads, when I reload the topics page, it keeps reloading read threads as unread, and sometimes it does this several times before the read threads reload as read. It’s really f’ing annoying.
This may relate to some of the other problems people are having accessing the site lately.
Is this a recent development or has it been around for a bit and you’re now mentioning it?
Does this happen intermittently? Does it happen frequently?
Does it eventually resolve or is this is a continuing problem?
This is all grist for the tech mill, that’s why I’m bugging you by asking questions.
Sorry it’s not been the best experience, we want to make it better.

It’s happened since I first signed up. And it happens frequently, practically all the time. I open the links in another tab, reload the page, and several read threads are still showing as unread. Sometimes I reload the page again, and the read threads show as read, but sometimes I have to load the page several times. Even after I look at the threads, then reload the page, this still happens. A minor problem compared to the 502/504 problem, but still annoying.
This happens if I haven’t deleted my straightdope cookies in a while. Since I don’t usually log in to read, only to post, my guess is that it’s storing my read/unread status by thread in a cookie. After a while, the cookie gets too big – it still keeps track of read/unread for some threads, but it loses track of any new threads’ unread statuses.

For those of you affected by this, can you try clearing cookies and starting again?

It does this to me but with all threads. Happens after a little while. Happens almost all the time now. Happened this session. Been doing this for a few months, but I’ve not bothered to report it. For what it’s worth, I regularly delete my cookies.
NOTE: This does not equal out my other, frequent-but-less-frequent problem of all threads showing read as soon as I log on, although you might think it would.
The read/unread and “first unread post” functions haven’t worked properly for me in many years. On any device, the boards will often mark as unread threads that I have read completely and the first unread post function will often take me to a post I’ve already read.
You said this is thread games. Are these fast moving games with lots of posts?
I know what you’re getting at, and it’s the same posts after reloading.
