The hypocrisy, it burns.
This thread and the f*&% abbot should be merged - just my thought.
I knew the Taliban was moving fast to take control of Afghanistan, but I had no idea they were this fast - they’ve taken over Texas, as well.
Unreluctantly, fuck Texas. Fuck Greg Abbott. Fuck Texas Right To Life.
Unreluctantly indeed. Enjoy your back-alley abortions, you fucking morons.
Is there anyway we could sell the “state” back to Mexico?
Mexico wouldn’t take them. They are too ignorant and backwards. Besides, most of them are criminals and drug dealers.
I see what you did there.
Well, some of them might be good people, I assume.
Some of us are fighting the good fight. And of course, that means the recent laws cracking down on the big (read: increasingly Dem) cities.
I imagine those receiving the back alley abortions by and large aren’t the people who will enjoy them.
The GD thread on this law has me thinking that this particular attempt will be relatively short-lived.
But it’s still as perfectly condemning as you say as a general indication of how Republicans in Texas think and intend to operate.
But … the anti-abortion thing is all about the Sanctity of Life™, dontcha see? They’re perfectly consistent on this Sanctity of Life™ thing. F’rinstance …
https://www.cnn.com/2021/09/01/us/texas-open-carry-laws/index.html
Or another f’rinstance:
… and of course, this:
And this:
The fundamental premise of what calls itself the ‘pro-life’ movement is the notion that a fetal or embryonic human life is just as valuable as the lives of those of us who’ve already been born.
But no more than that. The value of a born life is a ceiling on the value of an unborn life. So if they value the latter at or near zero, then that pretty much undermines their moral justification for opposing abortion.
And that’s what they’ve done over the past 18 months. The same people who populate the ‘pro-life’ movement have basically shrugged as millions of people around the world have died of Covid. And the ‘pro-life’ orgs haven’t concerned themselves in the least about the plague deaths. And of course evangelicals, who are the backbone of the ‘pro-life’ movement, have been in the vanguard of the ‘fuck masks, fuck the vax’ movement. They’re objectively anti-life.
So whatever their motivation for opposing abortion (punishing women for having sex, I assume), it’s clear that their alleged regard for the sanctity of life is bullshit and has nothing to do with it.
So, Texas passed & signed “The Fugitive Woman Act”…? Will fat white guys with shotguns and packs of hounds be chasing them across the fields as they try to flee their “owners”?
Will other states allow them refuge?
(I’m more than willing to hide “fugitive women” at my house until we can figure out a safe route to get them across the border and into Canada.)
More like “pro-birth” that “pro-life”. Look how strenuously they object to WIC, SNAP and welfare in general in addition to your points about COVID.
States in the south are racing to see who reaches the goal of ‘American Taliban’ first.
Rightwingers will claim that they hate the Taliban, but they only hate the god they worship, otherwise they like the ideology.
The other crazy part of this anti-abortion law is that anyone can sue anyone for providing assistance to obtain an abortion - and that includes giving someone money, transportation or assistance with transportation to another state to get one. If you are so sued and you don’t show up in court to defend yourself, you are automatically guilty and the plaintiff is awarded up to $10,000. If you win your case, you are awarded nothing. You’re innocent but out the legal fees and court costs.
Am I the only one who thinks this is unworkable? Say I’m disgusted with my homeowners’ association. I sue each and every one of them for helping someone, a neighbor, sister, niece or friend, say, to obtain an abortion by giving them a ride to the bus stop or money. Doesn’t matter that the allegations are completely fabricated and there’s no proof of any of it. If they don’t show up in court, they are guilty and I get money. If they do show up and I lose - well, I’ll just do it again next week. It seems like this law can be used to harass anybody anyone has a grudge against, male or female. I think there’s a 100% chance it will be abused like this and the courts will be flooded with nuisance lawsuits - but not necessarily against abortion providers.
As long as the law is not working as intended, fine.
With the Supreme Court taking a pass, I think the only avenue left to abortion rights defenders in Texas is to sue every Republican officeholder or voter who is even tangentially related to someone who had an abortion. You gave birthday money to your niece who ended up using it to pay for an abortion? See you in court. You dropped your sister off at the bus stop, not knowing she was going to take the Number 9 to the abortion clinic? See you in court. You didn’t know you were assisting an abortion? You can make your case in court, with all of the lawyers fees and interruption to your life that entails.
It’s a pretty fucking weak strategy, but it’s all we have left.
