I worked on Afghanistan development issues from the day after 9/11 until whole country fell to the Taliban in 2022. Ultimately, I think that places like Afghanistan and Texas have to stand up for themselves. It sucks, but we just can’t help you.
Well, Afghanistan is a separate country. I wasn’t aware that Texas was, too.
That’ll probably bring on a bunch of jokes because some Texans want to secede and be our own country, but at this time we are not.
It is to to me. One thing that Trumpism has made clear is that red and blue Americans are not countrymen. I feel bad for decent people stuck behind the confederate curtain, but I can’t help them any more that I could help Afghans. Thank god I’m not a woman in either place.
I would have thought US citizens living in supposedly our own country would be worth something, but I guess not, then. Or if not for humanitarian reasons, then for our potential electoral college votes. No Dems have tried to appeal to Texans in years except for Beto, who did come close to beating the reptile known as Ted Cruz.
The only problem for the rest of the country is that this shit won’t stay within Texas’ borders. When will it be worth doing something about it? I guess my point is that the more states that turn red, the closer the whole country gets to permanent Republican presidencies, if Trump doesn’t take on a dictatorship before that.
In a sane state? Yeah, maybe.
In Texas, who knows? It’s like playing Calvinball all the damned time. You’re only safe if you’re the right gender, color, religion, tax bracket, and political party. And sometimes not even then
They have, but appealing to Texans is different than appealing to people nationally. It’s still a conservative state, even if it’s not quite as conservative or reactionary as people think. Coming close to beating Ted Cruz is hardly a challenge. Cruz has a hard time acting like a human being. At the statewide level, things are somewhere in the 55/45 range. At the local/district level, things are …tilted towards one party through a variety of means including gerrymandering, and that advantage makes it even harder to win, so the state legislature and Congressional representation is tilted even more than 55/45
Almost definitely. There were over 20 women joined a lawsuit asking for clarification about, but had it thrown out for lack of standing because they were no longer pregnant. I expect that same thing will happen to Cox. Which was of course the plan.
So long as they can delay the court cases of months until either the plaintiffs give birth or seek out of state abortions, they can keep the law so vague that no gynecologist in Texas will do any procedure that might terminate a pregnancy no matter what the extingency, but when accused they can just say “But the law says in the Bill that abortion is allowed to ‘save the life or prevent substantial impairment of bodily function of the mother’, so anyone who really needs one can get one.”
Absolutely, I can’t help Texas and need to focus on stopping their contagion. These are the idiots who are rewriting history to erase slavery and exporting their theocracy. I can’t lift them up, I’m too worried about them dragging us down.
ETA: like I said, I don’t consider them countrymen.
My biggest fear, regarding this courageous woman and her incredibly difficult decision, is that the doctor who will deliver this baby (and that’s what they do this late in a pregnancy) is an incompetent butcher and an opportunist. I just hope she can get this done safely, and be allowed to grieve her lost child in private and move on with her life, in good health.
Not knowing what town she lives in, it’s also possible that she might have had to leave the state anyway, because the nearest hospital that would do this would be in another state. Her procedure should be done in a hospital, anyway, at this point.
p.s. I DEFINITELY hope that “out of state” does not mean Mexico.
I don’t believe in capital E Evil, but things like that make me wonder…
Well, those bastards just ruled against her, so she got a bit of a headstart
Travis County is basically Austin. To even bring a suit like this most likely meant she was in one of the big cities or suburbs thereof. Her own doctor was willing if the state gave the all clear
For those with the means, it’s generally meant NM or CO but they naturally haven’t been advertising where they intend to go ahead of time
Same. Unfortunately, I do have to regard a few of them as family.
The sane Texans (Don’t start!) are my countryhumans. The others are to be considered Enemies of Humanity.
What is that meant to mean? The days of ‘butchers’ performing backyard abortions are the thing of horror stories nowadays, although for poorer women in Texas, it might certainly be more of a prospect. Why would the mother in this story have her baby delivered by an 'incompetent butcher and (snip) opportunist?
What do you propose?
But on top of eveything else she has gone through, this being the U.S. no doubt she can look forward to her health insurer trying to wriggle out of paying.
Really, what would you have the rest of America do to save Texas (or Florida, or Ohio, or Kansas, or… see the problem there?) from itself? It has to happen there. But for 8+ years it has looked like there is nobody there can think of anything but bring back Beto O’Rourke to take another whack.

Really, what would you have the rest of America do to save Texas (or Florida, or Ohio, or Kansas, or… see the problem there?) from itself?
The Supreme Court was the only external savior, of course, which is why they worked so hard to subvert it. And why “just leave” is probably now the only recourse.

or Kansas
Hey, there’s a glimmer of hope for us here. Remember, we were the first state to vote to keep abortion rights after Roe was overturned. And the clinics here are a welcome destination for women from Texas and Oklahoma.
I am sick to death of these fucking lunatics dominating our culture and politics. Ignorant pig fucking morons.

and all insular territories for addtional pedantry.
Hey, hey, hey! Are you trying to give the magagoflatearthers someting to hang their stupid red hats on regarding election illegalities?
I don’t know. I’m not a lawyer, so probably my wild ideas wouldn’t work. It’d be nice if more people would donate to get-out-the-vote funds for Texas, Florida, etc. It’d be nice if there could be some kind of civil rights suit. It just seems fucked up to me that we’re supposed to be US citizens with certain civil rights and protections, but apparently some of us can be blatantly treated as less worthy than a dead fetus and it’s just “you’re on your own.” It’s making me feel even more dejected and alone than I already was.
I guess for me this is all the more acute because I honestly don’t believe it’s going to get better from within. Abbott et al may as well be mini (not so mini) dictators. There’s almost no way to overcome them from within.
I’m also already coming at this from years of being told we can’t have the Medicaid expansion here because of the Supreme Court decision that states didn’t have to if they didn’t want. Something so important, but Texans can’t have it because, just, well, whatever, we’re on our own. Supposed to be part of the US but not worthy because some of us are cretins. All the super hilarious and original jokes about “ha ha, let 'em secede, it’ll be a relief.”
