Remote Sensor on TV needs help

Today I used my remote to turn on my tv. Then I tried to mute the sound it didn’t work. The I noticed I coudn’t turn the tv off. I figured the remote was probably in need of new batteries. However the remote works fine for the cable box and the VCR.

I tired two other universal remotes I managed to collect. They both work for the Cable Box and VCR but not the TV.

Thus I am assuming the sensor failed. Any suggestions. I don’t want to buy a new tv for something trivial as I only control the sound with the TV (all else is controlled by the cable box)

Try cleaning the sensor “window”. A little plastic covered square on the front. Put a tiny amount of window cleaner on a paper towel and wipe. Don’t ever spray anything on an electronic device.

Also, look for other sources of IR that may be saturating the sensor. Nearby lamps, direct or reflected sunshine, etc.

Another, less likely, possible explanation: Your TV has two+ remote code settings. E.g., some Sony’s have this (for people with >1 TV set). Perhaps it accidently got changed to another code.

TVs have no user servicable parts inside. The reason they say this is they don’t want you to die taking off the cover.

That and the more direct reason - you can receive a very nasty shock from the componentry in there, even in an unplugged set.
