Removing airbag warnings

My car has airbag warnings on both sun visors. I hate them. They’re ugly as hell in an otherwise gorgeous interior, and all the damn things say is “See warnings on other side,” in red, yellow, black, and white hideousness. I don’t care about the warnings on the inside, but I detest the outside warnings. I want them gone.

So how can I remove these things? The warnings themselves are clearly some sort of decals, since I can see the clear edges if the light is right. The visors they’re stuck to appear to be vinyl.

They must die. Please help me to kill them.

Get a pair of socks in matching or complementary colors to your car’s interior. Snip off the toes and sew the edges with flexible thread. Then slip them over the sun visors.

Do we have any suggestions from people who were not engineers on the Mars Climate Orbiter?

:stuck_out_tongue:

Amazingly, there’s a boatload of responses when I punched this into Google (Just for the hell of it). Apparently you’re not the only one who finds these things horrid.

Since your post doesn’t say which car you’re talking about, it’s kind of fruitless to link to the different sites. Punch in the car + ‘removing airbag warning stickers’, and you should be loaded for bear.

It’s probably impossible to remove the labels without leaving a mark.

If it really bothered me, I would take them them (the visors) to an upholstery shop.

Measure your visors. Observe how they are mounted. Perhaps take one out and carry it with you.

Go to a you-pull-it junkyard. Starting with older cars of the same manufacture as yours, search for some non-airbag visors of the same size, color, and mounting bracket.

For example, I gave my father a Chevy Corsica for his birthday, which had flimsy visors, with an overstretched map-holder-elastic-thingy that hung down in the driver’s field of view. I installed a nice set of visors from an Olds 88 Royale, which are larger (but still fit), thicker, have no airbag warning, and are equipped with nice flip-up vanity mirrors on both sides.

What?! Get rid of the decals?! I love the icon of a crushed child on my sun visor.

My old car had “inadequate” airbag warnings (they were only printed on the top side of the visor, which was the norm in 1994 when I bought the car) so the manufacturer (Plymouth) had to mail out stickers to put on the underside saying to flip the visor over and read the warnings. The letter said it is illegal to sell (or re-sell) a car with airbags without the warnings on both sides of the visor. Is there a lawyer in the house to verify if that law is still on the books?

IAAL, but I seriously doubt any such law ever existed. You might be liable for civil damages if you resell your car without the warnings and somebody gets hurt because of the missing warning, but that’s just a matter of common law and the whim of your jury. I’m willing to take that chance, myself.

Sock it to me?

Dropped in while checking out just who you are, minty green, since we’re currently disagreeing on another thread.

Frankly, I’m with you here, but for a different reason. I think the air bags should go, too. I’m constantly hearing of injuries that occur **because ** of air bags, even fatalities!

Now I’ve been driving since before seat belts were std. equip., and I installed them in my first car and all subsequent cars until they were mandated. But air bags scare the shit out of me!

Don’t get me started on airbags. I would like to get hold of the Nazi who mandated them and treat him/her to the same gentle touch of an inflating airbag. Then I’d like to charge $2000 for the treatment.

Sorry for the hijack. I would have to see the visor to tell. Most of them are fabric which would make it hard to remove cleanly. Getting them recovered by a professional is the worst case scenario so you have nothing to lose by trying. Find someone who can do the work first.
