The spring or whatever inside the sunvisor in my car has broken so it flops down in front of my eyes all the time. Where can I take it to get this fixed? A body shop? I have an excellent mechanic that I rely on for all engine/powertrain/brake work, etc., but this seems a little out of his realm.

A mechanic may be able to take care of it. I go to a local convertible top and upholstery shop. Your mechanic may be able to recommend one, but if you search on Car Upholstery Repair with your location you should get some hits.
I took my visor apart (the mount for it that is), tightly wrapped a rubber band where the broken plastic ring was, and it works well enough. It still flops a little but it mostly stays where I put it.
I don’t know what you drive, I have a Toyota sedan from 2001. Once I took it apart and saw what broke it was pretty simple.
I have a 1988 Ford Ranger and it has that problem. I took one of the visor out to see what could be done about it and it appears to have been deliberately designed so as not to be repairable in any way. I will go to a junkyard when I have time, as replacements are not available on the interwebz. Or fabricate my own.
 Fords :smack:
It’s probably a broken plastic part and not repairable. If you go to your regular mechanic he will go to the dealer for a NEW visor at $100-$150 + his time. Check Ebay for a good used visor for $10-25 and he (or you) can install it in 15 minutes.
Does your visor contain a lighted mirror? If so then there will also be a small wire harness going thru the mount which may or may not have a disconnect built-in. If it isn’t lighted then it will literally just be two or three screws holding the visor’s mount to the roof of the car. You can’t really take visors apart, they are usually sewn together, so you won’t be able to fix or replace the part that keeps its adjuster stiff.
Either get a replacement visor from a junkyard or find one on eBay (eBay will definitely be cheaper). If you get one online make sure the interior color is an exact match before ordering.
