Currently, in my Windows Downloaded Program File, I’m finding an unwanted ActiveX Control for “Adult Links.” Whenever I try to delete it or remove it, I get a message saying “SHARE VIOLATION: These program files are currently being used by one or more programs,” and I’m not allowed to delete it.
Over the past week, probably as a result, an Icon for “Free Viagra” keeps popping up on my main menu, and “free viagra” (along with sports gambling and free porn DVDs) keep appearing in my favorite places folder. No matter how often I delete, those, they seem to keep reappearing.
Any idea how to remove this crud entirely, so that I don’t have to re-delete it every other day?
Thanks for the idea- but, forgive my ignorance, I haven’t been able to figure out how to get into safe mode. The instructions (hold control while waiting for Windows screen to return) didn’t seem to work. Instead, I got a “stuck key” message (the computer though the pressed-down control key was an erroneously stuck key).
hitting F5 should give you Safe Mode and F8 the menu. You can also try editing MSDOS.SYS
:
In Windows9X, setting Bootmenu=1 in MSDOS.SYS brings up the F8 startup menu. Setting Bootmenu=0 gets rid of it.
(Adding the line BootMenuDelay=(1-99) gives you a 1 to 99 second delay before it boots normally from the startup menu.
For example BootMenuDelay=30 gives a 30 second delay.)
Start hitting F8 after the BIOS screen disappears. This is typically the screen where the memory counts up. You should get a menu where you can choose Safe Mode.
