Pretty much. In the past, Dan Snyder had vowed that the team would never change its name; until a few weeks ago, there’s never been any sign that that policy had changed.

My guess is that when Snyder does settle on a name, it will be some sort of dog whistle to show he is still on Team Trump. Maybe he can just change the first part of the old name and the team will be the Washington Orangeskins .

Speculation I heard on our local sports talk radio was that Snyder announced the name change as a distraction to the Post sexual harassment article coming out a few days later.

Newts are green. Juvenile newts, or efts, are red. If you call them the Washington Efts, they can keep the team colors. And people can also refer to the as the effing Efts.

The articles I read pointed out that it takes a long time to research a new name and secure the trademarks. I think in most cases for a new product, we’re not aware of just how long this takes, because it happens behind closed doors. But in this case, we know when the search started and will hear when it’s completed.
