Rep. Charlie Norwood, Republican of Georgia has ended his cancer treatment and is returning home to enter a hospice. He says he has decided the treatment made him feel so bad that he would just accept he is ‘going home.’ Since I know nothing of this guy, and I presume the CNN article would have mentioned if he was a supporter of anything really nasty, I want to express my sympathies and admiration to the guy and his family.
He was a dentist who was elected to congress 14 years ago as his first public office. He got a (single) lung transplant a few years ago. Cancer was discovered last year in the other lung. It has now spread. He has chosen to die with dignity and spare his family the horror of watching him in prolonged agony.
(How like Art Buchwald who recently died.)
I hope I have the courage when my time comes. He sounds like a classy guy.
