Rep. Jasmine Crockett to run for U.S. Senate in Texas

I like Crockett, but I’m glad to see Talarico win the primary. I like most of what he has to say, and how he talks about how his faith affects his politics, which I find all too rare in Democratic candidates.

This is the precise reason most Trump voters give for why they did vote for him. The previous poster’s point is well taken - an old white male can get away with it.

I am disappointed by the outcome, but I think they are both excellent candidates. The perfect outcome IMHO would be Crockett in the Senate and Talarico in the House. Only because he is young and untested, and the Senators will eat his lunch for a few years. As long as she holds onto her House seat I’ll be happy though. Those two both being in Washington will be a boon to the whole country.

That’s if James wins the general. (Please oh please.)

She gave it up to run for the Senate. She’ll be out at the end of this term.

There was a long article about this race in the New Yorker last week and it made me feel like both these candidates could go far in the future.

Reasons to like Talarico: When putting together a statement about the Democrats ending the government shutdown, he had to be talked out of leading it with “This is why everyone hates the Democratic Party”.

He told Beto O’Rourke and Joaquin Castro to piss off when they pressured him to drop out in favor of Colin Allred.

Transcript of him grilling a Texas legislative leader about proposed library censorship laws:

TALARICO: Could “Romeo and Juliet be banned because it mentions premarital sex?”

ASSHOLE: There may be some, whether their own individual value system or their religious beliefs, that could believe that…

TALARICO: If your answer is anything other than “Of course not”, then that’s a serious problem.

This was another thing about this race: the claims that the party establishment wanted Talarico to step aside for someone else who’s already got a bigger name and instead maybe run for Governor. Maybe Allred should have stayed in the race and faced Talarico head-to-head – or maybe Crockett should have been actively campaigning for it from the beginning instead of waiting to the last moment for Allred to drop out to announce. (The chatter in comment sections is that Talarico asked if Crockett intended to run before he announced, and was told no. But that may just be itself noise.)

I am not happy to lose Crockett in the House, she was looking like she could be a long-term powerhouse, and more immediately had the proper nerve and spirit to shut down some of the Republican cray-crays.

Does anyone have any info on why she quit the House to run? Or what her plans are now?

She and Moskowitz are truly bright lights in the House..

Representatives are on the ballot every two years. I don’t even know if she could have run for the Senate without choosing not to run for re-election to the House.

Pastor Frederick Haynes III won the Democratic nomination to succeed her in Texas District 30.

Let’s make Jasmine Crockett President of the DNC then. Or run HER for Governor of TX.

Some states have a law against the same person running for two offices, while in others it is allowed. Someone should put together a Wikipedia page on this, but I don’t see one.

In Texas, it seems to vary depending on what the pair of offices is. AI is telling me it was not possible in Crockett’s situation. See:

NPR: On This Day In 1959: Texas Passes ‘LBJ Law’

I recall reading, in my 60 or so years of newspaper reading, that the non-incumbent sometimes tries to make an issue out of the incumbent legally running for two offices. Supposedly, in states more permissive than Texas, it shows some kind of political courage to give up your House seat when running for the Senate. But I think it is a ridiculous reason not to vote for someone.
