I’ve tried logging out and logging back in, changing the board theme, but whenever I click “Reply with Quote” I go to the compose reply page, but the text of the post I wish to quote is not there. The only way it works is if I change from the WYSIWYG (enhanced) editor to the basic text box, then it works.
Still a question to be answered: Which forum skin are you using?
I have the same version of Firefox Quantum using the Enhanced WYSIWYG interface – AND the Straight Dope v3.7.3 skin/theme. (Select from bottom of the “Edit Options” page in the UserCP.) The reply with quote works in that combination, or at least it works for me.
If you’re using another theme such as “Sultantheme” that may be your problem.
It was sultantheme at first, but it seemed tied to the editor mode. But every combo of theme and editor works fine on my iPad. Let me see if maybe I have an extension/add-on mucking with things.
it did, it just started working again (sultantheme with enhanced editor.) I did notice the slowness and got a couple of timeouts earlier like Johnny L.A. said, so it must have been related to that. Case closed!
I’ve discovered the the Visual Editor is a bit weird. It actually sends a request to the server to render the text, rather than doing it in the browser. If the server is having trouble when it sends the request, the Visual Editor may come back blank.
I think I have the same or similar issue, but I cannot understand the responses posted here. When I press “reply” directly under one’s response (in a thread of replies as listed in order under the original post (OP)), I do not see the quote appearing in my response box - which would make it clear to all to see specifically to what I am responding. I don’t understand this talk of “skins” and versions of SD, etc… (Hey, aren’t we all using the SAME version of SD simply by coming to this website?) Maybe someone can explain in simpler terms.
If you want to be including the other poster’s quote in your response (and see it in your response box as you compose your response), you need to highlight the actual text of their response before hitting the “Reply” key.
If you hit “Reply” to a post without highlighting text, your reply will tag the other poster, and show that your post is in response to theirs, but it won’t show the text.
Also, and this is just a Discourse oddity, but if you quote the entirety of the most recent post in a thread as part of your reply, Discourse will automatically edit the quote out of your post (apparently because it thinks it’s not necessary to display that quote).

Thanks! But, let me ask…what is “Discourse”? …A browser?

Or click the “Reply” button and then the speech-ballon icon in the compose box if you want to quote the entire post.[/quote]
Thanks, but what is the “speech balloon”? Below each post, I see (from left to right) a “link” icon, “three horizontal dots”, and “Reply”. Is it hidden under the three dots, perhaps?
You won’t see the “speech balloon” until you actually start to compose a reply (i.e., after clicking on “Reply”). At that point, your “composition window” will have a bunch of buttons for formatting at the top of the window – bold, italic, etc., as well as the speech balloon.
Damn. It worked while I was typing my reply, but it did not appear when I hit “Reply” to post my reply. (See my previous post immediately above.)
