Another plug for Ethiopian. It’s tasty. Oh, and taxi, I have right now a coffee cake topped with pecans sitting in my kitchen. It’s a very adaptable recipe. It would be good with almond extract, sliced almonds, and marzipan, or probably with applesauce added, or maybe lemon peel and a lemon icing drizzled over… I’ll stop now. I like that cake. It takes ten minutes to put together, lasts for days, and you can play with the ingredients.
Okay. I think I am as packed and ready as I can be, since I can’t pack the toiletries or some of the kid’s stuff until my BiL gets here, and Nat wakes up. I hope he arrives soon- he was supposed to be here about twelve.
Everything is chaotic, but we’re leaving a day ahead of schedule, and that means no real tidying or vacuuming. Sigh. I might, might tidy a little after Mr. Lissar’s brother arrives. Right now I’m too tired.
Great suggestions, Mama Tigs! I’m gonna go look up some of those places now. KT and I have had Ethiopian, but my parents have not. I’m not sure if it’d be too spicy for them. I know the Thai food would be. DC Coast may be just perfect for dinner with the parents. Plus, we do have good ethnic restaurants around here, but we haven’t found a good but not-too-expensive seafood place here so maybe that would be the best thing to do while on the East Coast. And I think the American History Museum (which I checked on and it’s open until 5:30) sounds like a great idea, something we’d all like.
The pecan variation sounds like a perfect place for me to start, LiLi. KT loves pecans. I’ll have to try that as soon as we get back from our Xmas trip!
Neither my mother nor my MIL had ever had Ethiopian, either, taxi, but they both loved it. It’s not always really spicy, which is good since neither of them likes terribly spicy food. Your server can help you out there.
Be warned, though, that you can run up quite a bill at DC Coast. Some years back I won a $100 gift certificate to them through our office United Way drawing, and we invited another couple. Granted, we all splurged on things like lobster, but nevertheless, the four of us still ran up a $200 bill – without any alcohol whatsoever!
On the other hand, I used to go there occasionally with girlfriends from work for our monthly “$20 lunch,” and we’d have a truly wonderful meal for under $20 each. One time, however, one girlfriend and I went to Ten Penh for lunch, which had just opened on Pennsylvania Avenue in the building we were working in at the time, and even though we split an appetizer, bought two of the cheapest entrees on the menu, and split a dessert, we still had a $70 lunch bill. I never did confess to Papa Tigs about that one for some strange reason.
There’s also a surprisingly good little cafe in the courtyard of the National Gallery of Art if you want to get a decent lunch. Some of the Smithsonian museums tend to be too much fried food and way overpriced, but the National Gallery cafe is quite delightful.
I’m running the idea of DC Coast by KT right now so we’ll see what he thinks, but I think it’ll be in the acceptable price range. We don’t usually order appetizers or dessert, and I don’t think any of us will go for the lobster! So it should be a good choice for a nice meal without being too expensive. Plus, the location’s great if we do go to the history museum. That looks (from google maps anyway) like a walkable distance.
I keep meaning to tell you, too, that I started on a scarf for KT for xmas. I keep thinking of it when you say you’re working on a scarf for Papa Tigs. KT knows about his though. We went to a yarn shop back in Nov - the first time he’d been into a yarn shop - and he got all excited about the alpaca yarn so I told him to pick out the color he wanted and I’d make him a scarf. It’s sooooo nice. Super soft and just great to work with. Well, aside from little bits of fuzz on everything. But they’re soft fuzz so who cares?? I think possibly with the flights to and from PA and then the drive up north to where we’re spending xmas with KT’s parents, I may just have it done in time!
I think I’m going to take a nap. My lunch out was nice but I am so tired from everything. No snow yet, but we’re supposed to get 5-9 inches tonight (there’s a penis joke in there somewhere).
I’ve got the bread machine making a loaf of quick white bread - it’ll make a good addition to leftover lasagna for supper. Supper will also feature a conversation with the young folk - I’m getting tired of waking up to a dirty kitchen. Today there was dried-on ice cream drips on my stove. Yesterday, it was remnants of something that boiled over. Plus the two of them seem to think if they get the leftover containers in the vicinity of the sink, that’s enough, even if they’re full of residue.
GRRRR
I was given the supposedly easy job of shepherding a coworker’s project thru the review process so it could be posted. First reviewer found some typos - that’s easy to fix. Second one was still reviewing when I left. Just to stave off problems, I passed it to the final reviewer so he knew what was coming. He had some major issues with it that I can’t fix. I was not involved with the creation of this product at all. I know nothing about it. But I now know that she didn’t bother coordination with another engineer on a very crucial element that affects both another project. So I told my soon-to-be-ex-project leader that there was no way it was going to be posted tomorrow.
The woman who created it isn’t coming back till Monday… assuming she doesn’t start her vacation then. Oh, yeah, and this thing is already a week late. And now my name is associated with it, which is NOT GOOD for me. And on top of all of that, this is the woman that I can’t stand!!! <headdesk>
Next week should be pretty dead at work - too bad I can’t Dope. But I may slip a sudoku book into my purse - just in case.

Mr Rebo and I have been out shopping. We went to Target to get some make-up for me, then we went downtown to go to the Central Market - a gourmet grocery store to get fresh crabmeat for crabcakes today. I also snagged a prime rib roast for New Year’s Day. It was pricey, but a dinner out would cost as much! Plus we’ll have tons of leftovers. And a soup bone!
And we got a Christmas tree, finally! I’ll decorate it tomorrow. The needles are already falling off, but it was only 20 bucks, and already mounted (straight!) on a stand.
Well, Hawkeye had to get a root canal at the dentist today. He’s still coming back for the Extravaganza at work tonight. I don’t know if I would. I’m off to it myself.
It’s snowing!!
I mean, it’s really snowing! There are 3 inches on the mail box. It’s been snowing all around us since yesterday morning, but it didn’t start here until the weather people said it seems to have missed us. :dubious:.
The temperature is in the 20s, it rarely gets below freezing here, so that’s a shock.
I can’t get out my back door because of the glare ice on the steps. I’m now old enough to worry about broken hips.
Now they’re saying we may have a white Christmas. Good and bad there, we have to drive 100 miles to hubby’s folks Christmas eve. We have 4 wheel drive, so we should be ok.
No snow here yet-- the weather advisory was supposed to start at 3pm. The Weather Channel has so pissed me off that I haven’t turned it on again to check. I much prefer when it was all weather, all the time–not this “When Weather Made a Difference” (as if weather doesn’t make a difference every damned day). Just tell me the forecast, bitches.
Wee hostile over here. I am exhausted and couldn’t nap. I think I need to just be nice to myself and go slow–so much has happened in the past few weeks that I am wandering around a bit dazed and confused.
Tonight’s dinner is potatoes all rotten (family joke, really au gratin) and kielbasa–hibernation food.
picu: the roads will be clear by then, even with Seattle’s 4 plows. At least, I hope so!
Ooh!!! Y’all stay safe with all that snow and ice stuff. I’m running the freakin’ air conditioning…
Guess who’s bringing home a new car for me? Wow! Mr Rebo has been wanting to get out of his high truck payment, so he bought me a (new to me!) slightly used '08 Nissan Altima! I already have an '02, and I love it. He traded his truck for my new car, and we’ll trade in my '02 for a used truck for him. It’s navy blue with black leather interior. I’m losing the 6-CD changer, the sunroof, and the radio controls on the steering wheel. But that’s ok. I’ll get a 6-CD changer later. I won’t miss the sunroof, but I will miss the controls on the steering wheel. That was a cool feature!
I have to go make a salad, then fry up the crab cakes that await me in the fridge. And heat up the lobster bisque. I hope it’s good - Dad loves lobster bisque. Maybe I’ll try to make it one of these days. It’s gourmet night at the Rebo house!
Howdy Y’all! I got taken out to dindin. We went to Blackbeard’s which is a local seafood/fish place. I’ve been in the mood for some catfish, so I had me some catfish fillets, fries, cheese grits and hush puppies. It ain’t good to eat like that often but it was dang good tonight! I’s stuffded.
rigs here’s another trout upside the haid for the worser half. Maybe it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have the talk with the kids. Like somebody said upthread (if I weren’t lazy I’d go back and see who but I’m lazy) maybe it’d be good to get it out there in the open and clear the air a bit.
Yay on the good review Muppet!
MOOOOOM dried on stuff on the stove top is grounds for killin’ here at da cave. Then again I tend to clean my stove top and oven a couple times a week so it just may be an OCD thing on my part.
All y’all with icky weather, be safe. Next week it’s gonna chill down to the 60s for highs. There’ll be icebergs in the pool!
Well, the inlaws’ new (to them) computer is almost set up for their use. Daughter will need to finish when she hooks it up to their phone line. I pulled all the game shortcuts on to the desktop, so MIL can play her Spider solitaire.
The kids are out buying some local wines to take to Orlando with them. I’ve got a load of jeans in the dryer. **FCD **has decided to take off the days between Christmas and New Years, and I may join him. I’m not sure yet. We’ll see…
My son is home!!! He needs to see a dentist, but boy is it good to see him again. Poor guy, his wisdom teeth need to come out. I just signed up for the fedbens (or whatever the name of that thing is), it’s the extra insurance you can get–dental and vision; it won’t kick in until after January 1st though. Fortunately, I got a nationwide plan, so he should be able to see a dentist where he goes to college. In the mean time, I’ll try to get him in to an emergency dentist some time while he’s home.
{{{{{Rigs}}}}} - your husband and MIL get the wet trout routine. Still though, I agree with others that it may be time to sit down with the kids and share with them what’s happening. Before your MIL does. {{{{{kaiwik}}}}} too–it’s worse when this happens over the holidays. I wish there was more I could offer than cyber hugs. My situation is different, but let’s just say it’s like I’m in a leaky boat on the same lake.
Party at work went okay, but not without some drama for me, unfortunately. Not worth telling about, mostly because it will only set me on a slow burn again. But it’s water over (or under? LOL) the bridge now. The catered lunch was barbeque and the beef brisket was delicious! Hopefully there will be leftovers tomorrow; and also hopefully there may be some dessert leftovers as well. I sort of OD’ed on chocolate cheesecake, plus I had a couple of rum/bourbon balls. Yikes, they were strong! The band was, as always, very good - a couple of co-workers are in the band, which has been around since the 70s. I always want to stay longer, but by my regular time to leave, I am ready to go.
Ah well, tomorrow IS Firday for real. LOL I’ve been waiting for it all week long, it seems. …and I have!
It’s already Firday here. Not that it matters - I still have six essays to grade and another class tomorrow. Also if I have to read ONE MORE ESSAY that starts with the line “Eros, or Cupid, is the god of love,” I am going to stab myself. How do twenty students manage to start all their essays with the exact same line?
DC Coast walking distance from the American History Museum? Hahahaha! Hahahahahahahaha! Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
Ahem. Trust me, you’ll want to take a cab. That is a LONG walk. And uphill from the Mall. Take a cab. Or if you really want to walk a bit and feel healthy, take the Metro to McPherson Square; that’ll get you within a couple of blocks. But it is NOT a good walking distance. Distances in DC, especially around the Mall, are deceptive; for example, did you realize it’s a full mile from the Capitol to the Washington Monument – and that’s only half the way down the Mall?
Take a cab.
Back to doing not much.
ETA: All you folks getting snow, take care! At least I learned that while he had to fly to Texas via Chicago, at least Papa Tigs is able to fly back home via Dallas. Although it’s been so foggy in San Antonio he may not get out of there in any case. I want him home to take care of me! Waah!
