Reporting "spam" posts; Overkill?

OK, so I’m surfing the dope, and spot some fresh spam. As a dutiful netizen, I report it. I return to the forum and see that the spammer has posted its message multiple times. Should I report each of these posts redundantly, or will the mod-on-the-scene presumably also see these multiple posts and deal with them?

IOW, is one “report this post” sufficient or should I spam the moderators with each and every instance of what is basically the same thing?

As far as I’m concerned, I first wish the offender you’ve reported into the cornfield. Then I ban the user.

And then I do a “show all posts by” the spammer. If there are any more, they also get wished away.

Up to you, really. We will never get on your case for reporting too many spam posts. There ain’t such a thing.

Go ahead and report them. I check my e-mail before I go to work each morning, and might not check the whole forum to see if there are other problems before I gulp down my coffee and head out the door. If you report the other incidents, I’ll do my best to take care of them before I leave.

Thanx. Pretty much answered my question.

Just as a note, I try to make my reports humorous or witty, as well as conveying the “Hey, spammer post!” concept. I figure that the Mods. may get one or multiple reports, and something that makes their day at least slightly more interesting instead of the 938th “Spam” report is worth giving them.

I check to see if the spammer is online. If the dot after the username is green, then the user is online. Blue, he’s offline. If he’s online, then I ban first, and then search. Otherwise, I move the post into the cornfield, and I do a search on the spammer’s posts. Usually a spammer only posts spam. Sometimes it’s one post, sometimes it’s several posts. I especially enjoy catching a spammer who is engaged in spamming.

If you report spam, it’s nice to post in the thread something like “Spam reported”, so that other members will know that they don’t need to report it.

However, it’s possible that the board will hiccup or something, and possibly not email the report to the mod. So it’s OK to have duplicate reports. I have to say, there are a lot of members who really seem to appreciate having a board with as little spam as possible.

Any moderator is allowed to remove spam in any forum. All moderators have moderation powers in all forums, in fact, and part of the reason for this is so that we can remove spam or other problems when we see it.

and I would like to thank all of you mods for keeping this board so spam resistant.

Although, as Lynn says, all mods can act in all forums, we don’t all get “report this post” reports from all forums, only those to which we’re assigned – so another reason to report spam from the same person that’s posted in different forums is so that more moderators will get the report, increasing the odds that it goes to someone that’s online at that moment and can deal with it.
