Republicans' war on transgender people: Omnibus thread

Geez, you sure know a lot about spiders!

A reminder again that trans people (such as they were at the time) were themselves one of the early targets of the actual Nazis.

Trans people. Homosexuals. People who wrote books. Scholars. Professors. Teachers. Intelligencia of all stripe. Outspoken Democrats ( those whose voices carry ). Poles. And almost all the the Jews in Europe.

Just by posting here, you’d be on a list.
(You may already be on a list, if that matters. I’d be on that same list, so you can scream and howl about ‘such horrible company’.)

Induced suicide is the weapon used against transgender people. As a society we really need to address rising suicide rates and cyber bullying.

As far as I’ve seen, which may not be complete, The SD is an old message board that has mostly figured out how to regulate itself and keep the worst of online interactions out. I hope nobody feels unsafe being here.

Outside of here in many places, hatred is tolerated or incited by algorithms, and the many more numerous late adopters to the internet didn’t get that experience. It’s vicious.

My mother is at least honest enough to say this out loud. Transgendered people are so screwed up according to her that suicide is “the best thing for everyone concerned in many cases”.

And this from someone who is proudly a life long “Pro Life” Catholic.

A steady diet of EWTN and Fox News started her down this path and now streaming and social media have accelerated the spiral.

Jesus Christ, your mother is a fascist. I’m sorry.

Didn’t know that EWTN was like that now but I guess not surprised.

I don’t think it’s that way. Her world started to shrink into EWTN and Fox News as she grew older and didn’t get out much. The shit she’s getting from social media and streaming is much worse and since COVID there’s been a lot of that.

“Well mom, I’ll miss you, but you gotta do what you gotta do.”

Okay. Thank you for correcting me. I probably shouldn’t be so absolute.

I’m not really sure how to respond to situations like that. I’m not personally worried about political discrimination as much as direct and stochastic interpersonal hatred (and violence). Most regular Americans are politically inert, but still have a great deal of influence on the people they interact with.

For those who didn’t know…

Eternal World Television Network.

Word.

Yeah, EWTN… I remember when the late Benedict was elected Pope some of their on-air dudes were, ahem, kind of overly excited about how he was going to knock some liberal heads

My grandparents watched EWTN but I didn’t remember much political content or social commentary. Lots of church and praying, and I guess some sermons. Political punditry from there sounds dreadful.

It’s not political. It’s occasionally about abortion and marriage. I remember one particular show where the interviewee was expounding on why St Augustine was wrong.

And back when the Massachusetts Supreme Court legalized gay marriage, there were folks losing their shit over it. Most decorously of course, but talking about how this was going to undermine the sacred institution.

Republicans in OK introduce a bill banning gender-affirming medical care for anyone under the age of 26.

Why 26?

I’m going to guess that it’s because, under the ACA, young people can remain covered by their parents’ health insurance until their 26th birthdays.

Don’t think it will pass constitutional muster. Eighteen-year olds have the right to make their own medical decisions.

If I’m reading this correctly there’s a loophole if the person wanting to transition is willing to papercut themselves in the genitals.

Gender transition procedures do not include […] the treatment of any infection, injury, disease, or disorder that has been caused by or exacerbated by the performance of gender transition procedures, whether or not the gender transition procedure was performed in accordance with state and federal law

Pray it doesn’t come to that though.

Hah! Have you been living under a rock this past year?
