From the linked article: “prohibiting doctors from prescribing the therapies for transgender youth”. I think conservatives like DeSantis want to know what “transgender youth” means.
Also any Opera companies in AZ would have to heavily restrict their repertoire.
Ballet companies too, at least at the pre-professional level, which tend to be majority female. For instance, my daughter played “Friend of Fritz” in a performance of The Nutcracker - the role of one of several little boy guests at a family Christmas party. Male clothes, wig, the whole bit. Who would be considered the criminal here - the young dancers, the director, the parents who let their kids learn ballet?
This all makes me so sad as a person. (slight hijack on/off topic). I grew up on a steady diet of Oprah and Geraldo (mum always had it on when I came home from school). I am the type of person who will honestly settle things with strikes before words. I grew up a criminal. I am from “the other side of the tracks”… Most of my friends IRL would be considered “dim bulbs” in general. Not one of us doesn’t support trans people. I don’t know how you can grow up even with Jerry Springer and not see that they are just regular old people just wanting to be who they are. I learned this in the early 80’s… It is just horrifying and shocking to me that people under the age of 80 would still attack them…
I can still remember vividly some poor dude (who identified as such) who had both sets of genitalia and identified as a man but he had to use products for women. His life story was horrifying only due to bullying. Just hurts my heart. I don’t like it and I can get a little violently abusive when people tell me they dont have a right to exist etc. Makes me want to make that person not exist…
I truly despise the human inclination of “the other”. Trans rights should just be a foregone conclusion as gay rights should have been. Before that … well we all remember… just boggles my mind how they can let delusion, fear and hatred rule over logic and empathy.
I do secretly hope that clarence thomas truly reverses all decisions and then is charged for being in an interracial marriage because of where one of his summer homes etc are “oh well I didn’t think it would affect me?” Just like when they ruled that a person’s house is not free from protest… cowards. /slight Hijack over.
But George Santos wants transgender people to join the GOP! So how can there be a war against them? /s
There have been more anti-trans bills put forward thus far in January than in the entirety of 2022.
Oklahoma Republicans have identified the problem with said bill. Clearly it just doesn’t go far enough:
An Oklahoma bill would make it a felony punishable by up to a $20,000 fine for drag artists to perform in front of minors.
The bill would make it “unlawful for a person to engage in an adult cabaret performance” in public before a minor. The fine may fall in the range of $500 to $20,000, and it may also incur a prison sentence from 30 days to two years, according to the bill’s text.
State GOP Rep. Kevin West, who filed House Bill 2186 on January 19, told Insider that the bill is intended to limit performances “in a public place.”
“But if you have a private venue and parents want to take their children there, then that would not be affected by this bill,” West told Insider. “It wouldn’t be allowed where just the general public would be able to see the performance. So like a library or a school or something like that would fall into being under the jurisdiction of this bill.”
The bill compared drag performers to strippers and topless dancers, defining “drag queen” as a “male or female performer who adopts a flamboyant or parodic feminine persona with glamorous or exaggerated costumes and makeup.”
One activist on Twitter also suggested that the wording may criminalize a woman displaying a “feminine persona” with heavy makeup around children, per Newsweek.
Tom Hanks had better hope nobody in Oklahoma plays reruns of Bosom Buddies. He could be facing a two-year felony conviction.
Grandfather laws are not allowed and any statute of limitations would have run out by now.
But I’m sure some nutball would try prosecuting anyway.
It’s specifically the ex post facto clause of the Constitution that bars retroactive laws, interpreted by the SC to apply only to criminal law.
Dang. My school never had a drag show. I must have had a sheltered childhood.
They couldn’t go after the people who made the TV show, but I don’t see why they couldn’t go after someone for airing it now.
I’m pretty sure the due process clauses independently prohibit ex post facto criminal statutes, since promulgation of law is a major tenet of criminal due process.

So, no more Mrs. Doubtfire on network TV or Disney+?
And thank Og for that! Just look at how generations growing up watching Mrs. Doubtfire, Tootsie and Bosom Buddies turned out to be! The Republicans are just trying to save future generations from the damage being exposed to such shocking content at such a young age caused past generations.
And Bugs Bunny! And Shakespeare!
And Milton Berle!
Do you really think the people pushing this agenda give a rat’s ass about such legal principles? They’ll drag Tom Hanks into court, throw him in jail, and let the Supreme Court rubber stamp all this a few years down the line.
Don’t forget Flip Wilson!
And Rudy Guiliani!
Of course the Republicans fear regarding the drag queen story hour isn’t really that the trans person in question will expose the children to some age inappropriate sexual content act during the library reading, its that they won’t. The danger is that these innocent children will be exposed to a trans person being nice and reasonable and kind, and that they will realize first hand that all the fear mongering against them is nothing but bigotted bullshit.
