I was thinking that, too, but there was a pit thread accusing him of that. He’s a very thoughtful conservative. I think the same of Shodan and a few other posters, but of the visible/vocal conservative posters, I think OMG is probably right that someone pitted them at one time or another. I also think that if this board is “pretty far to the left,” then I must be living in some sort of alt universe. (I do think it’s left of most of America, but not particularly strong to the left. Perhaps we have more vocal leftists, I don’t know, but I find a lot of thoughts here pretty mainstream.)

I can name two trolls banned in the last month who were less interesting and more capable of rational thought than Humpy, and I know of at least one adbot (funny story, ask me some other time) I would far sooner be interested in reading the posts of.

I rarely, if ever, agree with them, and god damn if some of SA’s opinions aren’t disgustingly deplorable, but you can actually count on them to contribute valuable posts at least the majority of the time. Similarly, I dislike octopus, but he’s not a troll, he’s just an idiot.

We all have different experiences of diff posters at diff times over long time periods, and in various conflicts where it’s not at all clear that it isn’t trolling. At least I don’t see the line that well defined. Making valuable posts can’t disqualify one from being a troll.
But if I’m not here to see conservatives suffer I want similar treatment. You see that anywhere around here lately?
The thing is – and I’m trying to be honest and civil here – is that those of us on the left experience that, too. If you live in a conservative area (and even though I’m in Chicago, the vast majority of the people I grew up with are conservatives), you get condescension like that of OMG above: that liberals are somehow disconnected from reality and don’t know what the “real world” is about. Fuck that noise, I’ve seen more of the “real world” than most of the people I grew up with. It’s just fucking stupid to say one side or the other knows what “the real world” is. We just have different ways of approaching how to solve those problems. And, yes, I agree with you that there’s a lot of smug, condescending assholes in our midst. But to somehow paint this as a partisan thing seems wrong to me. I encounter the smug assholes from the other direction.

To clarify my own position I have never posted simply to stir up the liberal hornet’s nest. I’ve never seen any value in doing this. Outside the Pit you’re never going to get reasoned debate on your post and in the Pit there is nothing more tedious than hurling insults at each other, although I’ll give as good as I get if they are thrown my way. (One lapse I will own to. When Teddy Kennedy died I allowed my animus against him to get the better of me and I said some cruel things. I bitterly regret them now.)
My conservative views, which developed when I was in my 30s, are now of some 30 years’ standing and they are completely sincere. As an Englishman with a son living in Kentucky I follow the fortunes of the US closely. I really did not like Trump as a candidate (I still don’t like him as a person), I thought he was ruining the chances of a Republican victory, but when he actually won the Presidency I had to respect that. I am convinced a Republican administration will be good for the US and good for the UK and the world. I may be wrong but as a conservative that is what I sincerely believe.
The word troll is thrown around in this forum far too much, so much in fact that it’s lessening the word’s power. Some people seem to be of the belief that if they dislike someone or their post that makes them a troll, which is absurd.
Nevertheless I’m sure the name-calling will continue and to be honest being called a troll by some of the less impressive posters on the liberal side is cause more for a smile than an anguished sob.

I’m a conservative (and Black!) on a board dominated by liberals. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say I can probably handle “thoughts and opinions of those who do not align with my political beliefs”. As it is, I’m not dismissive of anyone’s opinion because they’re different-- if I’m “dismissive” of them, it’s because they’re wrong.
That’s exactly what I’m saying.
Bricker, Shodan, adaher and Starving Artist (I know at one point Starving Artist stopped posting) have received this board’s ire. If I could be bothered, I’d go look for the threads pitting them all at one time or another. QSH did to until he tacked to the left. It is what it is.

Liberal activists, by the nature of their objectives, have a greater need to seek out and use methods like the SDMB to popularize and market their message(s). Places like the SDMB, where they can circle safely in the glare of implicit approval, makes conservative carrion easy pickings here.
