I will agree, though, that social media and message boards are good places to bond with politically similar individuals, but terrible to start any meaningful dialogue and discussion with politically dissimilar folks. I do feel that has to be done in person. I have never seen anyone change their minds about anything on social media (or even message boards). It’s just a bunch of shouting into the wind and “me too!” or “you’re an idiot!” Much harder to do that in person.

Maybe the SDMB is a sort of macro troll itself - trolling the Internet for weak-minded undecided voters. Internet is the only way to reach alot of people without spending alot of money. So they scramble about posting on messageboards, hoping to either get enough people to vote correctly or at least riot more effectively. The intrinsic problem is not coming off like total jerks while patting each other on the back. Here. Now.

My conservative views, which developed when I was in my 30s, are now of some 30 years’ standing and they are completely sincere. As an Englishman with a son living in Kentucky I follow the fortunes of the US closely. I really did not like Trump as a candidate (I still don’t like him as a person), I thought he was ruining the chances of a Republican victory, but when he actually won the Presidency I had to respect that. I am convinced a Republican administration will be good for the US and good for the UK and the world. I may be wrong but as a conservative that is what I sincerely believe.

That has not been my experience with you, but if you feel that you have responded to my posts respectfully, then I will assume that that I misunderstood the vitriol you posted at me.

Now, I find it’s alot of work to keep all of you straight, so it seems like quite a bit of work to try to treat everyone the way they treated me. I could make a mistake, and assume that someone was more inflammatory than they meant to be, and react based on my perception of their post, rather than their intent. I could err on the side of being more inflammatory than they were. I could completely fuck up and think I am responding to a different poster who has attacked me, and I attack “back” unjustifiably."

I find it much much easier to try to treat others with the kind of respect that I would like to have towards my own posts.

As far as language, it is perfectly damn possible to have a shitty vocabulary, and still be pretty fucking pleasant.

It is also possible, with no profanity whatsoever, to be hostile and unpleasant.
