I’m interested in doing some reading about trends in modern medicine. I find myself interested in the weight that is given to an individual’s self report of symptoms - especially in conditions with few clear objective findings such as mental health conditions, migraines, chronic pain, and the like.
I tend to be somewhat dubious about the medical community’s reliance upon an individual’s self reports, but I am not looking for material to support my predisposition. Instead, I am interested in trends through history, the motivations of the various parties involved, the varying efficacy of different approaches, the money/laws involved, and how any trends reflect societal beliefs/changes.
I am not medically trained, so I’m looking for information aimed at the general public - tho hopefully, not overly dumbed down. I’d hope to avoid resources that are overly biased towards one particular point of view or another. In this thread I’m not particularly interested in debating whatever opinions I or others may have. While I admit my predisposition, I hope that I am open to the possibility of modifying it should the information persuade me to do so.
Apologies if this is not in the correct forum. Thanks in advance.
