Rescue Dawn

In the middle of Summer Blockbuster season, I think this is the most interesting looking flick out there.

What does it have going for it?

  1. Werner Herzog directing a story of a guy running through the jungle

  2. Herzog already made a totally fascinating documentary about the exact same thing. You should see it. It’s called “Little Dieter Needs to Fly”.

  3. It sounds like Christian Bale gives an awesome performance. In a recent review, I read that he ate maggots and caught a live snake with his bare hands.

  4. Sounds like a crazy filming experience, analgous to Coppola on Apocalypse Now, but probably not so crazy. Maybe similar to the stuff they say Herzog did on that crazy movie, Aguirre.

Is this film on anyone else’s radar? It’s just about the only thing coming out that looks like a director’s movie, and not a studio’s movie. But, the fact that Herzog is getting a big summer release indicates that someone likes this thing.

Look at some of these photos:

It’s totally on my radar.

My boyfriend and I saw Little Dieter Needs to Fly several months ago and thought it was one of the best documentaries we’d ever seen. Werner Herzog and his filmmaking fascinate me. Sunday’s New York Times had an interview with Herzog, and I believe there’s additional audio content on their web site.
