Responding to an edit

Anyone subscribed to the thread will get an email with the original post, too, and notice the difference when actually going to the thread.

Mostly when I’ve edited its been for spelling so I haven’t worried about this very much but its something I’ve always been curious about. What happens if I quote something at the same time its being edited and how often does something like that happens. MPSIMS and Games, where I usually hang out, don’t seem active enough for that sort of thing. But some of the GD threads get real fast-and-furious now and then and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the issue pop up there. Does anyone know of a case or example where it actually occurred?

You can’t quote something at the same time that it’s being edited, for any practical purpose. “When something is edited” is when the editor presses the “submit” button. It doesn’t matter when the “edit post” button is pressed, or how long the editor is in the edit window.

Didn’t it used to be the case that you couldn’t edit something if there have been new posts to the thread? If I’m post #24, and Chronos comes back for post #25, I can’t go back and edit - even if I’m within the 5 minute edit?

I don’t believe that was ever the case on the SDMB. Is that options available via vBulletin?

Minor nitpick, that’s only if you have it set to email you. I, for example, have this board set up to subscribe to all threads I post to (or any others I choose to subscribe to), but not send me email notifications.
