Hear, hear!
He did it! (And I’m enjoying the last of the peanuts I ordered from Plains GA.)
IIRC Jimmy took over the peanut farm from his father sometime in the 1950’s.
Is the farm still operational? If so, is it owned by a Carter? Google is failing me.
Edit: never mind. I see that he sold the farm (the entire company, in fact) after leaving the presidency.
I am pleased Carter hit three digits and hope he gets a chance to vote.
His presidency was before my time. I understand he is the only President to have written the most books and had the fewest written about him, suggesting the absence of scandal is boring. I did not know he is largely personally responsible for eradicating the Guinea Worm. But this is a very impressive feat.
He voted yesterday. Georgia’s early voting began yesterday. But there are photos of him in line waiting to vote and he doesn’t look great. He is, of course, quite old.
The 1980 election was the first one I could vote in. And he was the first President (of 4) that I served under.
And has he met with Bat Boy like JFK used to after the assassination attempt?
Notice that that was the story, but the photo was of him at Rosalyn’s funeral.
I hope he lives until after Election Day. Just in case…
According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, most states haven’t stipulated what to do in such cases. Ten specifically mandate the counting of absentee ballots regardless of the voter’s corporeal status. (Connecticut allows it only when the deceased voter had been an active military member.) Another 10 states specifically forbid the counting of such ballots. Two—Kentucky and Mississippi—don’t have a statute addressing the issue, but reject the ballots based on legal opinions by their attorneys general. Three others allow residents to challenge such ballots.
- 10 states mandate the counting of ballots if the voter dies before the election. (In Connecticut, this only applies if the voter had been an active military member.)
- 10 states forbid counting the ballots.
- 2 states don’t have a law, but may reject the ballots if they want to.
- 3 states allow the ballots to be challenged.
The map in the article shows Georgia as one of the states that have no rules on the issue.
So has he voted, or not?
I’ve seen several other links today that implied, but failed, to say that Carter has actually voted.
They all said something like “His dream is coming true! Carter is 100, and today is early voting”.
But none of them actually said that Carter had cast a ballot.
Jimmy Carter fulfills wish of voting for Harris
Former President Jimmy Carter fulfilled his wish of voting for Vice President Harris in the 2024 presidential election, just more than two weeks after his 100th birthday.
The Carter Center confirmed Wednesday that Carter voted by mail on Oct. 16.
Was this ambiguous? (From WaPo link, above):
Former president Jimmy Carter, who had said he wanted to live long enough to vote in this year’s presidential election, cast an early ballot Wednesday in his home state of Georgia, according to the Carter Center.
That is not the picture showing him voting earlier today. As someone has already said.
From the article:
“His role was crucial,” Bourne said. “He would call people like the president of Ghana and say, ‘I want to talk to you about Guinea worm.’ It was difficult enough to get the minister of health on the phone, and to get a president to talk about Guinea worm was no easy feat. But they would all respond to him.”
I’ve seen him quoted in the past as saying that his status as ex-President was very useful in his humanitarian work because of all the doors it would open. People would talk with him, when an ex-President is on the line people pick up the phone, and once he got that wedge in he was good at persuading them. It was always nice to see somebody use that kind of status for a good cause, like Carter did.
More on JC voting - good on him!:
Egad but I hope he lives long enough to see Harris win.
From earlier in the thread:
Linked article:
Georgia’s law is clear: if a voter’s absentee ballot is processed before they pass away, their vote counts.
I’m sorry Jimmy, our votes weren’t enough to change yesterday’s outcome.
Probably the last presidential election he’ll ever vote in. What a shame.
Yup. And highly likely this orange stain will be the one who has the authority to allow him to lie in state in the Capital. Which will probably not be offered.
