May I suggest that we start calling our games (every week)…
SDMB or SDMB HE, and have the name in all caps so it will be easier to find for us.
If for some reason we have to dump a paricular game “SDMB” (or “SDMB HE”), then the next game we should open is “SDMB1” (or “SDMB1 HE”) and so on. Therefore, we won’t have to hunt around as much each time and can look for it each and every week with little difficulty. The newcomers won’t have to remember which user name made the game, just the good old “SDMB”.
I don’t think that there is a way to customize play money table names. The table is automatically named after the person who creates it. As long as we’re all using AIM and in the same chat room, it shouldn’t be a problem. Just know who ever has been chosen as the “old lady” will be the one creating the private table.
Don’t forget to e-mail me before 8pm est. tonight so I can make the seating assignments in advance. So far I only heard from Yeticus Rex.
Customer service on pokerroom, yeah that’ll happen. The site has been falling apart the last several days. Players disconnected at random, servers crashing, lags in tournaments, money vanishing out of accounts, and PR has no frickin’ clue what’s going on. Players call the support line and get told that it’s on their end, despite the fact that it’s happening to hundreds or thousands of players. It seems pretty obvious that some of it is because of a software update (so those of you using the download version I suggest going through the website instead) but some of it is that their servers are overloaded. Players, including some who’ve been there since almost the beginning, are taking their cash and going. I haven’t heard if the play money games have been as affected but be prepared.
Things did not start off so great again. We had two new dopers who wanted to play but unfortunately they couln’t because it takes time to become play money only enabled. Nanook of the North Shore got booted so many times he couldn’t even play in one hand. Don’t know what happened to Otto. I think its unanimous that we need to try another poker room. Lets decide on which room to try out and play a practice game Monday night.
The game lasted about an hour, with half of the time being a heads-up game played between Yeticus Rex and CapnPitt. It was quite a volley ball match but in the end CapnPitt took the chips. Congrats to CapnPitt!
Here are the results:
CapnPitt
Yeticus Rex
Only mostly Dead
Kyyrewyyoae
Aesiron
I tried to type in the results for #6 but something must be wrong with my keyboard. Anyway, lets decide on which poker room to try out and play a practice game Monday night.
On Bricker’s recommendation, I tried pokerstars out after our game. And it’s nice. Good layout, clean software. Don’t know if there’s a multiple-server issue or not, but I’m guessing not.
Unfortunately, I can’t find for the life of me a way to have a private play money game, or host a public table with booting privileges. Which means we’d need a 9 person bumrush on a table to play, with everybody staying until the end, if we want to keep the riffraff out.
And since X is clearly having keyboard issues, but mine is in perfect working order, I’ll fill in the blank. Coming in sixth, our illustrious leader, x-ray vision!
I shot an email to the pokerstars people to see if there was a way to do private free games. We’ll see if anything ever comes back
If all else fails, maybe we’ll expand slightly. I know I have a friend or two (non-dopers) who’d probably join in the table, in the proper spirit of not playing like a jerk. I know such a thing might throw the bragging rights chart a bit off, but it seems a better option to have 9 accountable people at a table and run it to a single winner than to try and pretend around a few total strangers buying in new chips all the time.
As further incentive for choosing pokerstars, I should point out that you can use custom avatars. I’m already set.
He got fed up trying to get on the same server as everyone else and being unable to, so he went and played cash games, going on a bit of a rush until such time as the real money server crashed again, disconnecting him and temporarily deleting his winnings out of his account. Never seems to disconnect me when I’m bleeding money but when I’m winning the cavalcade of dumpage begins…
AFAIK PokerRoom and its various skins (Hollywood etc.) are the only Mac-compatible sites so if the game moves to another site I will be unable to participate.
The bumrush method is too impossible to set up. If we can’t find another poker room that lets us set up play money private tables, I say with stick with pokerroom. The biggest problem is that you have to be “play money only” enabled for about a week before you see the same server as the rest of us, which really isn’t much of a problem. Nanook of the North Shore was repeatedly booted, but we don’t know if that is a problem with pokerroom, since most of the rest of us never had this problem. If we can find another poker room that will let us set up private tables, I’m all for checking it out but I wouldn’t mind sticking with pokerroom.
I don’t think this is correct. I was unable to see the table when I signed in through Hollywood, which uses the same servers as PR, with a play money only account. Accounts don’t AFAIK suddenly stop being real-money enabled; all enabling the account involves is listing your name and address information with the site. It wouldn’t make any sense for PR to disable the accounts after a week.
I think it is correct. When we played our exhibition game two weeks ago, dopers just recently opened new accounts. They were all “real money” enabled and were able to view “real money” tables. I opened my account some time ago and played only play money. I was not on the same server as the rest of you and could not see any “real money” tables. I had to open a new account and I was automatically “real money” enabled like everyone else. A week later when we played the first official tournament, everyone (including me) who was able to see “real money” tables a week before, suddenly could no longer see them. The only people who couldn’t see our table last night were two dopers who just opened an account (and were able to see “real money” tables) and you.
I think xray just phrased it a little wrong. After a week of not depositing money, you are not able to see real money tables. I’m not taking too much of a WAG when I say that they’re more than happy for you to put in real money, at which time you’ll be able to see real money tables.
Now the WAG comes in when I’ll say that Otto didn’t see us using his play money account because stupid pokerroom.com uses so many damn servers that you can’t find your people effectively. I had to log off and on about 4-5 times before I found our table. Also, I have no idea what happened to the two tables I tried to create.
Anyhoo, it was a pleasure to take all of your fake money last night. Yeticus Rex, you might have lost but you played a damn fine game. And thanks to everybody for the congrats.
Heh, you played a great game too…obviously. I know that last night’s head to head competition would have been worthy of a WSOP episode had it been in a brick and mortar setting. Those hands we were playing and betting were unreal. We were trading off leads 3 or 4 times each before I thought my set (of 10s?)would put me back up, but you did pull out that straight.
Later on, in our extended play, I pulled out a inside straight flush draw. I was holding the 46s, and the flop had the 23s and the river was the 5s…spades.
I got dumped 4 or 5 times from pokerroom too, and I have a cable connection!
Damn if Otto ain’t right!! I had a little over $16,000 in play money and played a little this evening. I ended up about $1500, left and noticed my money was down to $2700!! And this is AFTER the $2500 I quit with this evening.
Now it’s just play money, but I still liked having $16,000 more.
The ongoing PR tech saga is being documented in a thread at the PR “Pokah” site called something like “The Rod and Todd Report” (Rod and Todd are the moderators of the PR boards). Supposedly there’ve been some discoveries of errors deep within the coding which have been patched. I haven’t played since the patches went into place.
I’m just glad I saw your post. Not much sense in going all postal over 14K of play money, but it did make me re-think my strategy knowing I had no reserve funds (and tonite’s session was just off kilter). Back to the grind…
