Resurrection of Online Texas hold 'em tournaments for Dopers only (revised thread)

And I should say I’m using the DL version, if it matters, and I got an update a couple of nights ago when I went to log on. Not sure if that’s when I lost my $$$, I really wasn’t worrying about it, just keeping a mental tally.

When is the next game scheduled?

We play one official game every Thursday night at 10pm est. Read post #61 for details. I have your AIM ID on my buddy list. If you haven’t already signed up with Pokerroom, it would be a good idea if you did this as soon as possible so you don’t have problems seeing the same servers as the rest of us come Thursday.

Sounds cool. I have an account with pokerroom already, had it for a few months but my name is different. Looking forward to it!

Alright, here it is…another Thursday…who’s in?

I am.

E-mailing you now, X-Ray.

I hope I’ll be home in time to play. I’ll see you guys on AIM later and maybe you’ll have an extra seat.

I have no life; I’ll be there.

Hoping I can see the right tables this week… I’m in.

I’ll be there like usual.

Otto added me to the SDMB group, I am AugerX on PR. I didn’t know if I could create a new user name on PR with the same IP/email addy.

Thanks Otto! (Oh, I see…you were just lookin’ for an easy mark  )

And I just wanted to add how much in awe I was playing with you guys. It’s great to play with people who you have a bit of connection to, rather than just anonymous names online.

I apologize for my playing skills after the blinds were raised, that’ll take a little more thought on my part next time. And I apologize for dragging the game out, but to be honest, Bricker was just killing people and I was kinda skeered. Hopefully next time I can play like I have a pair so the game doesn’t drag on.

And in SDMB fashion, the table manners were just great. A real pleasure to play with you all.

Hope to make the game again.

And as a side note, PR was glitch free tonite as far as I could tell.

You apologize for your playing skills? You tore us apart.

Good show and great game.

We do have to work out the “honor system” blind business.

If the bet is to me and I bet $300, and my opponent intends to fold trash, he must still call the $300 first. That was one glitch we had, and it’s no fault to anyone, just working out the details of a kludge.

But if I wanted to RAISE on first bet - in other words, if our “blinds” are $300 each, and I want to bet $600, we have a problem. I bet $600 to open, and my opponent shouldn’t have to call… but he has no way to bet only $300 and then fold.

To quote Ashleigh Brilliant, I don’t have a solution, but I certainly admire the problem.

I was apologizing for what Bricker just mentioned. In the fast and furious action, the honor system blinds were confusing. I didn’t have any trouble remembering to post the blind when I had to act first, but calling the blind (which I was honor bound to do so) is tough when faced with a trash hand, and then the opening raise situation only added to my confusion.

It was my inexperience with anything but online, computer poker that compounded my troubles. In a real game, where somebody would no doubt remind me that I hadn’t placed enough chips on the table, I don’t think this would have been a problem. I’ve never played against people before, and even online I’ve never had to play heads-up for more than a hand or two before the table would fill back up.

I felt so sorry for the guys on the sideline watching the agonizingly slow heads-up, but with a little time and practice I think the heads-up honor blind system will work great. If I ever find myself in the same situation, I’ll have much more confidence in my understanding of how to play correctly.

All-in-all, it was more fun for me to just play with people who I had at least a passing connection to. Online poker is populated with a lot of jerks, so to sit in with people who don’t act like total assholes was the greatest highlight for me.

Last night went smoother than any game before. We were all able to get in the same room fairly quickly. No need for apologies Duke of Rat. As Bricker mentioned last night, if you think its best to play tight, then play tight. Congrats! Duke of Rat (AugerX) took eight of us down last night.

The honor system blinds you guys worked out last night went pretty well. The way to fix the problem you mentioned is to have a small and big blind. Next time we’ll play 150/300 or 300/600. I think waiting until the game is heads up, the way you guys did last night is a good idea. With too many people, it will just be too confusing for everyone to follow.
Here are last night’s results:

  1. AugerX

  2. Bricker

  3. x-ray vision

  4. Kyyrewyyoae

  5. Nanook of the North Shore

  6. CapnPitt

  7. Yeticus Rex

  8. Only Mostly Dead

  9. Aesiron
Since last night was our third official game, we now have official rankings. Here they are:

  10. Kyyrewyyoae 4.18 pts.

  11. x-ray vision 5.87 pts.

  12. Yeticus Rex 6.56 pts.

  13. Only Mostly Dead 7.01 pts.

  14. Aesiron 8.01 pts.

Congrats (so far) to Kyyrewyyoae. We have until the end of march to knock him off his perch or he goes down as 2005’s first quarter champ.

Correction: Last night’s #1 spot should be “Duke of Rat” not “AugerX”. I’m keeping track of rank by Straightdope names, not PR names.

I’d like to add a few comments and possibly a solution…

  1. When it gets down to the final two, a way to bump the blinds (and speed up the game) yet still have #1 position on the button is to have position #1 (for example, a 300/600) bet $100 and then have #2 position automatically raise $200. Then control goes back to #1 to reraise (now considered by us as a preflop bet) if he so wishes or he would just call if he wanted to “check” the now $300 blind. Both players have put in the $300 and #1 will end up on the button. It could work for 3 (50 bet, 100 raise, 200 reraise) players, but we would have to pay attention to the details a little more.

  2. Duke, I didn’t know it was you until I read your post this morning! Congrats…Here I thought that an outside “friend” of Bricker was laying the wood to us! Also Duke, get AOL Instant Messaging (AIM), becaused you missed all of our online chatter during the game…it’s way easier to read the AIM messages instead of the little comment box in Pokerroom.

  3. Hi Opal.

Yeah, I was afraid the user name thing would be a problem, but I need to do a little more research into having multiple user names at PR off the same email addy/IP. Hopefully I can play again and the strange name will come to be recognized.

Can you get AIM without using AOL? I’ve never tried to use any messaging services like that.

So you guys was talkin’ 'bout me since I couldn’t follow the conversation?

Which brings up another point I’ve often wondered about concerning online poker: What keeps players from using an instant messenger or similar (even a cell phone head set) to communicate with other players at a table? Not that I would worry about a SDMB play money game being hijacked, but it seems like in real money games, teams could work together.

The double-layered blind is interesting, especially in allowing the guy acting second to call only the blind amount and not any pre-flop raises. That was the main drawback to doing it in one lump amount…but it’ll take concentration to get it right (speaking for myself, I just hope I ever get into the position to be faced with such a task)…

You think any of us are forgetting who you are after last night?

You don’t think the rest of us would actually pay for AOL’s crappy service, do you? Go here and get the free download. Just name yourself Duke of Rat or AugerX so we don’t have a third name to remember you by.

Collusion happens all the time in online poker rooms. Most sites say something like “if you suspect any members are colluding, please contact us”, but I doubt they ever really do anything about it . Its too hard to prove.

Uh, I seemed to have overlooked that minor detail…damn you walnut-sized brain! :smack:

I suppose #1 countering with another $1 raise (which would now be considered a pre-flop check by #1) would now leave the pre-flop betting to allow #2 to actually bet or check, unless you are not allowed to do it by the game’s guidelines.

Is there only 3 raises or are there unlimited raises?
