On the whole, the 1986 Pennsylvania gubernatorial race was a rather interesting election for a variety of reasons. First of all, while the Democratic candidate Bob Casey Sr. was definitely to the left of the Republican William Scranton III on socioeconomic issues, Casey as a conservative Catholic was more socially conservative and strongly anti-abortion in particular while Scranton (like many Northeast Republicans) was far more moderate on cultural issues. This dynamic allowed the Casey campaign to attack Scranton as a “dope-smoking hippie” and for practicing transcendental meditation. Secondly, this campaign was where James Carville and Paul Begala got their start, partly by helping create the notorious “guru ad”.
Needless to say, I would have voted for Casey in a heartbeat.
