Return to Castle Wolfenstein

This has to be the best game ever! I’m usually a flightsim kinda guy, but I picked this up Saturday, and it’s absolutely incredible!

It’s a first person shooter using the Quake III engine, and the quality of the graphics is the best I’ve ever seen.

And I get to kill Nazis!!!

You start off infiltrating Castle Wolfenstein, but you and your partner get caught. You escape, but too late to save him (he’s been tortured to death.) If you want though, you can still pull the switch and send millions of volts through his body and watch smoke rise.

The Nazis fight back really well, which makes it all that more satisfying to kill them. They take cover, retreat, work in teams, they’re anything but cannon fodder.

You have to think carefully, and plan your assaults, you just can’t go storming through the castle or they’ll kill you in short order.

They can set off alarms, and nearby Nazis will hear gunshots and come investigating. It’s best to sneak up (Yes you can sneak) on these rotten Huns and knife them to death.

There’s a great storyline, and the puzzles are intriguing and not at all contrived. They’re logical and make sense.

All kinds of cool weapons like flamethrowers (the fire is the best effect I’ve ever seen in a videogame,) and the Sniper rifle is way cool.

I spent an hour last night dodging through the streets of a German village while a sniper hiding in an unknown location took potshots at me. When I finally tracked him down and wasted the Kraut I felt real satisfaction, and it was a tension I’ve rarely if ever felt in a videogame.

In hasty retreat I lobbed a grenade at a bunch of Nazis chasing me and ducked into a room. One of them picked it up and through it back at me!

And, of course those evil Nazis are always messing with the supernatural, and wouldn’t you know it, they’ve created Zombie Nazis! You can’t just shoot them, they’ll come back to life. You have to blow them to smithereens to stop them.

The cablecar ride was something out of James Bond movie.

The multiplayer looks amazing, and I can’t wait to give it a try. It’s a team thing, and should add replayability.

I’ve only really just begun this game, but if you like blood gore and killing Nazis in a thinking man’s shooter with the best graphics anywhere, you have to buy this game!

IT’S OUT?

This thing has been on my Amazon wish list forever. Every time I checked it wasn’t released yet. I must have this now.

  • Why A Duck (who remembers the early Wolfenstein games well)

I played the original Castle Wolfenstein on my PC Jr way back in the day. Still got it on 5.25" floppy. I played Castle Wolfenstein 3D when that came out. All six episodes - it was the first shareware game I ever registered - and Spear of Destiny as well. I have all of this week off from work. Here’s my dilemma - do I play Civ3, do I buy and play Aliens vs Predator 2, or do I buy and play Return to Castle Wolfenstein?

Help!

It’s out. I got it at Babbages on Saturday.

And, I used to play the original Escape from Castle Wofenstein for the the Commodore 64, and its sequel which was coincidentally also called Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

In that one, you infiltrated the castle, planted a bomb and killed Hitler.

Ino~

Having seen all three games, I opted for Wolfenstein. Picked it up on Thursday of last week, and have not regretted it for a minute!

Scylla’s review of this game is right on the mark. It is the most beautiful PC game I have ever played, by far.

O

played the multiplayer test of this and it was indeed great.

Whoohoo!

I thought they were leaving it alone because of the cartoony german stereotypes. “Liebchen!” I love Wolfenstein-- It was the first game that ever gave me a real suspension of disbelief. (Increased heart-rate-- What’s behind this door? AAAAAH!)

I actually got motion sickness from playing Wolfenstein in a dark room. I think I’m going to have to get this game.

How about a Dirty Dozen add on?

I’m going out and buying it tonight as a Christmas gift to myself.

However, wouldn’t it be even better for you Scylla if they were, in fact, not just Nazis but (gasp) Nazi Groundhogs? AMong your weapons would be gasoline, a .22, and the now infamous “gopher tosser.” Just an idea.

What I want to know is why is it $60? $60?..for a PC game? Did we lose a war?

I’m not a first person shooter type of guy (though I’m very impressed with Unreal Tournament for some reason.) But… the name Wolfenstein brings back memories. It must have been more than a decade ago when my then apartmentmates got a hold of this curious game. Not only was it the most amazing thing game we had ever seen, what with the blockish quadruple-pixel graphics and actual point of view interface, but it made our previous favorite, Scorched Earth, look like pong by comparison. And it was free to boot (4 levels worth, anyway.) I can’t imagine that the new Wolfenstein can ever be as unique as the original now that it must compete with the myriad players in the first person shooter genre that it pioneered, but it’s nice to hear that it is enjoyable.

Arrgggh. I went to both Staples and Office Max tonight, no luck. But it’s there, I will find it.

Now, if only Duke Nukem Forever would be released…

Having played beta for months, I really enjoyed the game. Would probably buy it for less money.

FREE TIP: Click and hold the grenade for three and a half clicks before releasing it, it’ll explode right on impact if timed right (great for onlining).

I played the medic on the test multiplayer a whole lot. Its quite fun going in and taking out the other team with a pistol and knife.

I won a tournament earlier with the choice between Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Civ3. After playing Civ3 for a while I think I would have been better off with Wolfenstein.

Don’t forget to watch out for those ninja nazies.

What system you guys running this on? I want it but I’m hurting for hardware these days. I’ve got a p3 450 with 256 megs of PC100 SDram and a 32 meg TNT2. I’ve got a 64 meg Geforce2 MX400 coming in the mail and I’m planning an upgrade soon anyway. But in the meantime will RtCW be any good on my system?

Now I am going to have to get this game.

I loved Wolfenstein and think it was one of the first PC games I ever played. A true classic.

Now… with multiplayer support this could get kind of interesting…

Gonna get RtCW… but I’m still waiting anxiously for Doom 3…

I’m playing it on a P2 400 with 384 megs of SDRAM and the 64 meg Geforce2 MX400. Works fine on my system.

I was playing a 1:30 AM Saturday morning in the dark and I ran into a bunch of zombies in a crypt and they were attacking me from all sides. I got creeped out and had to quit for the night. I bested them the next day though. This is the best shooter I’ve ever played by far.

“HILFE! MEDIC!”

One thing, though, if you want to run it with all the bells and whistles turned on…

I am running a P3 700, Windows 2000 and a GeForce 1, 32MB video card. I was getting stuttering and still frames.

I bumped the ram in the machine from 128MB to 392, and it now runs smooth as silk in 1,024x768 with the highest graphics settings. So make sure that you have 256MB of ram if you are running it under Win2K or XP.

O

What do the Nazis say when you shoot them in CastelWolfenstein? Is it “I’m bleeding!” ?
