We have tickets for Weird Al’s tour next week (in Minnesota), and I’ve heard that most of the songs are his originals. Did anyone attend yet and have a review? I’m sure it’s a good concert, but what do you think?
There’s a web site that has his set list city by city.
Not me (though I wish it were) but a poster named mpascal02 on RPG dot net. Link here and text under spoiler below.
Well, I went to see the Self-Indulgent Tour last night…
If it comes anywhere in your vicinity, I HIGHLY recommend you go! It was an entire show of nothing but deep cuts – a very different experience from the usual Al show, but it was incredibly fun. And now, I can check “See Weird Al perform Albuquerque live with the entire audience singing along” off my bucket list!
All the reviews I’ve seen so far are good. I’ll be seeing him in Napa, in a cozy theater that’s just slightly larger than “intimate” which is stark contrast to the arena sized place I last saw him at. Should be a hell of a good night.
So my review (I’m the OP), after seeing him last week.
I knew it would be mostly his original songs, the deep cuts, and it was as promised. His band was tight; obviously they’ve done this before! The setup was just the guys sitting on stools with some concert lighting and a fog machine, and nothing else.
I’ve seen other set lists online, so I knew what kind of songs he’d be doing. For us one of the highlights was “Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota”, and the crowd went wild for it, but maybe because we’re in Minnesota! I knew only half of the songs well enough to sing along, and it seemed like those were the majority of the songs he played last night. (My wife said the songs seemed to be mean-spirited!) However the rest of the set made up for it. He closed with a medley of the parodies, then a double encore which ended with “The Saga Begins”. It was a good concert, but didn’t really blow me away.
The opening act is Emo Philips, and I’ve liked his crazy style from way back in the 1980’s. He was great! No offense to Al, but I enjoyed Emo more than Al.
Would I go again? Of course I would!
