Rhode Island changing the state name

I only found out the official name a few years back

oh, I thought they were finally changing it to “Cacapoopoopeepeeshire.”

The legislature may not go along with the change. If they change the name to Rhode Island and Still the Longest State Name then it may get through. We don’t have much here, giving up the longest state name is a tough sell.

Thank you. I learned something new today. Are there any other states with names that don’t match what they’re generally called?

Maybe they are changing the name. The Governor ordered the full name not be used in a list of official documents. The legislature is removing it from official documents. The legislature is on track to put it on the ballot, for a second time, and let the people of the state to decide.

That is where things get tricky. The voters didn’t support the change last time. The vote in 2010 was 77.9% to keep the name vs 22.1% in favor. I assume recent events will change things a lot but I would still be leery of automatically assuming almost a third of the no votes change their mind.

Seems a bit extreme. Plymouth, MA was originally Plymouth Plantation. It had nothing to do with slavery.

Virginia, Kentucky and Mass. say they are commonwealths, not states.

Pennsylvania is also a commonwealth.

Right. The NPR article in the OP mentions that, saying, “At the time, the word ‘plantation’ referred to a new settlement and didn’t connote an agricultural estate cultivated by slaves.”

It also points out that Roger Williams, who founded Rhode Island, was an abolitionist. But the “Plymouth Plantations” part of the name is just a historical legacy; no one calls it by the full name so I can’t imagine much controversy over this change.

Finances must be really poor if they’re being forced to trim the state name.

I don’t get the “Island” part of the name.

There is an actual island (Aquidneck Island) that comprises part of the state called “Rhode Island.” Aquidneck Island was called “Rhode Island”

VA, KY, MA and PA do more than just say they are commonwealths; it’s part of their official name.
And TN and WA are officially The State of Tennessee and The State of Washington.
(IL, for example, is just Illinois)

when you get to cities, however, nothing beats
La Villa Real de la Santa Fe de San Francisco de Asís (Santa Fe, NM)

The governor there can only do what he can do. After that, its in the hands of Providence.

The original name of Los Angeles was “El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles.”

Siddig El Tahir El Fadil El Siddig Abderrahman Mohammed Ahmed Abdel Karim El Mahdi

should move to Santa Fe

Most people know him as Alexander Siddig

Was
Santa Fe still is…

A lake in Mass is Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg

Translations are fun.

L.A. was “The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels”.

Santa Fe was “The Royal Village of the Holy Faith of Saint Francis of Assisi”.

Nitpick: She. The RI governor is female. As a former RI resident, I propose “State of Rhode Island, Bigger Than Most Ice Floes.”
