Agreed. No matter what, I like pasta more than potatoes or rice.
Potatoes - no matter what. Rice just can’t hold a candle to potatoes versatility or general yumminess.
I eat both, but I usually prefer rice. (I’d say I was a “rice man,” but I’m afraid that’d just send an entirely wrong message.
)
Sounds like a debate down @ the Web or Pegasus
Potatoes. I don’t like many of the ingredients that need to be added to rice to make it interesting.

Potatoes. More good ways to cook them. With rice it’s either plain with butter or some sort of pilaf; potatoes can be baked, pan fried, deep fried, boiled, or mashed. And that’s before you have to add anything.
Finally consider potato chips vs. rice cakes. Q.E.D.
not *or *and
Nuh uh! meatloaf + rice = hedgehog meatballs!
For me, rice. Unless someone else will mash the potatoes, then it’s potatoes all the way, baby.
If the sauce is anything other than teriyaki or citrus-based: potatoes. If cheese is involved in any way: potatoes.
Rolling lox in mashed potatoes and calling it “German Sushi” is not tasty.
My initial instinct is potatoes, but that might just be the Irish blood in me talking.
But I agree with you both: rice and potatoes are both rather bland and tasteless by themselves. They are better as part of a meal. So maybe you should argue about which meal you want to eat – the rice/potato decision will follow.
Aren’t potatos nutritionally better? Well, even if they’re not, I’m still saying potatos because I prefer the taste.
I’m all for rice. I don’t like the texture of cooked potatoes, whether they’re in Indian food, baked, twice-baked or mashed. But I always like rice.
This is just wrong. Plain or pilaf? Have you never had risotto? How about paella? The varieties are endless for both.
PhoenixFire: Try this simple dish: quickly brown a couple of pork chops in a small amount of oil in a heavy skillet. Remove. Throw in some minced onions and green pepper and saute for a few minutes. Add 1/2 cup or so of rice and a can of tomato soup. Mix together well. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to simmer. Put the pork chops back in and cook for about 20 minutes.
Mashed potatoes or pea soup?
Well, anyone can mash potatoes!
People who say either rice or potatoes is bland and tasteless, must either smoke, drink, or eat too much salt.
Both have their own unique subtle tastes.
Acquire a potato ricer. Then you don’t have to choose. As a bonus, you can then put globs of riced potato on top of a stew and steam them, turning them into Potatoes Infused With The Essence of All That Is Good About Stew (PIWTEATIGAS).
I would pick potatos over just about any other foodstuff on the planet.
Porcupines!
That’s what I shall make for supper tomorrow. Thanks for the idea.
