Thanks, IMWOMAN, but I’m not angry. First I felt violated, then gloomy, and now I’m apprehensive. A break-in to an apartment and a break-in to a car. I used to think this was a safe neighborhood. Cops hang out at the taco stand on the corner, for crimeny sake.
I’m saying this here only because none of you live in my neighborhood, but I’m eyeing the people across the street from me. It’s a house, not an apartment, and I think I’ve mentioned that they have parties that go on until 4am and spill out into the street. They’re not particularly loud, except in the sense that talking in normal tones on the sidewalk at 4am is loud, but they generally act like the whole street is theirs. It might not be one of the residents, but one of their hangers-on.
Or it could be someone from the properties in back of us who jumped the wall. I’m looking at the immediate area because as I said, my car’s not bait, so whoever targeted me probably didn’t come from far afield in pursuit of it.
Or it could be a car-stereo ring, like Friend Across Town said. But again, it’s funny that they would overlook the 5.0 and the Maxima in favor of my Escort. Which makes me think this was someone with prior knowledge of those vehicles being alarmed and mine not.
I’m not angry. I was angry at the person who stole my wallet, but that’s because they made a concerted effort to intimidate, then scam me. This is just feeling vulnerable, like “Why me?”
Wow, Rilch, that’s terrible. I hate to hear about things like this happening to good people. And you’re always such a sweet poster here, I’ve developed an image of you as a good and kind person. I’m sorry this happened to you. You deserve better. I hope this doesn’t set you back too much.
I say we kneecap 'em. Me, Biggirl, a few other of the New York Arm of the Dopers International Brotherhood of Enforcers, we hunt 'em down and get Medieval on their ass.
Seriously, I’ve been there. I had a piece of camera gear stolen from my car in Astoria, NY because I was unloading it ALONE and didn’t RUN back quite fast enough. It was hearbreaking and luckily, was worth only a few hundred dollars.
I’m so sorry for the loss. No matter what STUFF was taken, the emotional hit of knowing someone violated your space is at least as bad, from where I sit.
{{{{{{{{{{{{Rilch}}}}}}}}}}}}} May Van Morrison soon sing over you as you drive again.

Aw Rilch…
That really sucks honey. Man… I wish I could pack up one of my tracking dogs and hunt down the pricks who did that…

On the bright side, you’re safe, your hubby is safe, and you do still have a vehicle.
I’ll be thinking of you today as I head off to work…
Elly
Update: There was another break-in on my street. I don’t know whether to be scared or to think “Well, they’ve already done me…” Feel bad for the current victim(s), of course.
Thank you all for your kind words. Yes, I’m grateful to still have a vehicle, and also to live in CA, where I can drive without a window at no risk to life and limb.
It’ll sort out. Whoever these fools are, they’ll either be caught soon or move on. I hope caught. I had fingerprints taken from the vehicle, for what that’s worth.
