RIP Brian Dennehy

I think I first spotted him in 10 as the aw-shucks bartender, but he really made an impression on me in Cocoon and F/X. A very talented actor, and he will be missed. He also was, to his credit, a big enough man to apologize for lying about his military service.

I saw him on stage in London doing Death of a Salesman a few years back. Magnificent performance. Vale.

I winced a little bit when I saw the headline of one story marking him as the “Tommy Boy” actor. I have to imagine that his spirit might’ve winced a little bit, too.

To be fair, he was perfect in that role. The whole point is that we spend the rest of the movie watching his son try to follow in Dad’s footsteps, and mostly fall short; and that only works if we first see a genial Brian Dennehy completely in his element, talking like a small-town mayor at the bank before shooting the breeze with the guys on his factory floor before amiably closing a deal that plenty of people are counting on, and all by constantly thinking in terms of quality products that save lives.

I can’t readily think of anyone who could’ve fielded that better.

I had missed this, until Blacklist did an in memoriam card for with their season finale.
