Is there a report out indicating this is what he died from?
Not officially AFAIK but TMZ has headlined it as coming from their “close sources”
My mother took me to a Buffett concert when I was in first grade ca. 1987. I’ve been a fan ever since. His Feeding Frenzy live album is good. His song The City is only available on that album, and it’s a good song.
I’ve long wished his Live by the Bay concert was available on CD (or these days streaming, I guess).
As someone who deals with existential angst on a daily basis, I’ve always found A Pirate Looks at 40 to be the perfect salve for the soul.
Fun fact: I Love the Now was co-written by Carrie Fisher (yes, that Carrie Fisher).
Seeing him live in concert was a happy event. It was not possible to be unhappy, just standing in line with other people was a happiness. Talking to people that you would otherwise have nothing in common with.
And he really connected to the crowd. I saw him at the Clark County Washington event arena in early 2000’s, I don’t know what the venue is called now. It was about an hour from where I live and work. We had a weekly production planning meeting, I was the Production Planner, to discuss the schedule for the next week. It was always a battle between what production wanted to make and what customer service needed, I was the eye of the needle.
So we had our weekly meeting and I showed up in a flowery Hawaiian shirt. The main boss said "Aloha’ and I told them that I was leaving after the meeting to go to a Jimmy Buffet concert. The usual antagonistic meeting went into happy mode.
I left after the meeting, the venue was only about an hour away, and me and my wife checked into a hotel and went to a local bar. There were several big black limosines with Texas licence plates that showed up after we were seated. It was Jimmy and crew having a pre-concert meal in the back room. I did not meet him, but the concert, mostly outdoor, was a happy high point.
I did not know that. How interesting. Great song.
Had a burger and a Margarita this afternoon in his honor. Another one of my favorites of his, not mentioned yet, is Love in the Library.
I’m familiar with Jimmy through Alan Jackson’s song, It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere.
I’ve heard Margaritaville on the radio since high school. I love the laid back atmosphere and lifestyle in these songs.
Thanks for many memories Jimmy
RIP
I heard he died because - his head hurt, his feet stank and he didn’t love jesus …
The end of that chorus was
If I don’t die by Thursday, I’ll be roarin’ Friday night!
Don’t think he was doing much roarin’ last night.
I’ve never been to one of his concerts, but we gave him some money by eating breakfast at his Las Vegas restaurant; it was much wilder at night when we walked by after dark. The NYT says he died as a billionaire. I never get tired of Margaritaville when it comes on the radio, even though it’s so overplayed. My brother emulated his laid-back boozy style and was happy doing so, so I’m glad he had a role model.
I think it was serendipity but today my email included this recipe:
I met him at an airshow. He loved aircraft. No idea what plane the static display was, but it opened, some military types exited and ohmyfuckinggod that’s Jimmy Buffett. He got out, came over to his golf cart where we were standing, shook hands, chatted us up. Hella nice guy. Stellar moment for me.
When you get a 23andMe DNA result they give you the name of a famous relation. My wife got Jimmy Buffett. So have more than a few other people we have met who had their DNA tested with the service. I’m not sure what that means exactly. I got some saint who’s supposed remains/relic have been tested.
Terrible irony for a guy who basically made a career from “Hey, the beach is really cool right?”
I know anyone can get it. I rate fairly high (0.11% in 5 years) on Melanoma Risk Calculator
In August 1995 - the month Jerry Garcia died - I took my friend Al, a much-more-of-a-Deadhead than me to see Jimmy at Jones Beach (Amphi-) Theater at Jones Beach. He kinda laughed at the notion of Parrotheads yet we went and it was a good time. Everyone in Hawaiian or tie-dye shirts.
Jimmy of course had to play eight songs or so every night while The Dead rarely played the same song twice in any three-consecutive shows (outside of the improvisational Drums & Space and perhaps if they were touring for an album)
And she’s a real beauty
A Long Island cutie (*crowd raws")
(I know he did that bit of improv everywhere)
Jimmy encored with “Uncle John’s Band” that night which was nice. “Playing to the tide” indeed.
I’m surprised that his mansion is in Palm Beach.
I always assumed he lived in the Florida Keys. (Key West or Key Largo)
It is ironic that his celebrity centered around the beach and ocean. I guess he needed higher SPF sun cream.
I cringe remembering Buffett and I grew up at a time when everyone brought tanning lotion to the beach. Coppertone was very popular.
Yeah, I always hated tanning, but when I was a teenager I still got out there covered in butter like an idjit.
His last words were “have fun.”
I’m not a ‘parrothead’. What’s the significance of the cheeseburgers?
Cool of him to donate the aircraft.
Largely due to Buffett’s 1978 song, “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” which became one of his signature songs. He based the song on a real-life experience:
Ah. Thank you. I’ve never heard that song.
