RIP Philthy Animal
You know I’m born to lose, and gambling’s for fools
But that’s the way I like it baby
I don’t wanna live for ever
And don’t forget the joker!
Very sad news. I always felt that Motörhead lost some of its spark after he quit the band.
Here’s a mini-playlist in tribute:
The Chase Is Better Than the Catch
Iron Fist
I Got Mine
I’m So Bad Baby I Don’t Care
and of course: Stone Dead Forever
Danm. Half of one hell of a rhythm section. Gonna have to make a point of listening to those records tomorrow morning.
Wow, no shit!
RIP Philthy!
Phuck.
To the station! Music!
I have the wrong member of Motorhead in the Death Pool. With their lifestyle how are any of them still alive?
A friend of mine is a drummer and was working as an engineer on recording projects at the time. He was hanging out in a studio and rehearsal space when he was shown Motorhead’s rehearsal space. The bassist was there and invited him to get behind the kit. He said the drumsticks were telephone poles and the kit was set up so big and tight that he had to play the HARDEST HE HAD EVER PLAYED, ALL THE TIME to make the kit go.
Then Phil showed up and stared him off the kit
RIP Phil.
Loving how your friend actually met LEMMY IN THE FLESH and merely refers to him as “the bassist.”
I was just listening to the early Motorhead yesterday too. Looks like I’ll have to listen to some more today. RIP Philthy.
Jeez - I walked right past that. He has so many stories where the side characters matter (this was a sidebar within a much larger story). He was telling me this story about producing a recording in a barn - the complexity of capturing the natural sound of the place. I eventually asked him who the artist was and it was Paul Carrack.
I pinged my friend - it wasn’t Lemmy, it was “the guitarist” - he couldn’t remember who, but it was in the early 80’s so likely Fast Eddie Clarke or Robbo Robertson…glad I didn’t miss that.
I remember the first time I heard “Overkill”, and I couldn’t believe how fast, yet distinct, the drum line was.
Overkill, live in Nottingham, 1980.
Here he is doing Ace of Spades on The Young Ones. The Hard Day’s Night pisstake at the station still cracks me up, especially Rik trying to shoplift.
RIP.
