RIP:Robert Quine

One of the greatest guitarists of all time,
Robert Quine died of a heroin overdose. Geez…it seems that every few months another one of my hero’s kick the bucket :frowning:

Had never heard of him.

But ya gotta love a guy who tosses his law degree to take a low paying job at a film memorabilia shop and play in rock bands at night. Sounds like a man who not only played it, but lived rock and roll.

He was apparently dispondent over the death of his wife.

I knew about his work with Richard Hell, and I own the Quine Tapes Velvet Underground live recordings, but what I didn’t know was that he played lead guitar on the Matthew Sweet album Girlfriend. The guitar work on that album is just fantastic.

Oh no :frowning:

I just found out about Elvin Jones yesterday, and now this.

Quine also played on some of the 80’s Lou Reed records, bringing out this terrible gag:
Q: What’s the similarity between Robert Quine and the letter ‘D’?
A: They both make ‘Lou’ ‘LOUD’

RIP Robert.

A list of all the albums Quine appeared on is found here.

He will be missed.

Damn. I, too am only familiar with his Voidoids work, but what brilliance! The guitar solo in “Love Comes in Spurts” is so primitive and anarchic, yet coming out of a learned player such as him…I think it was just…transcendent…

RIP :frowning:

Oh, and please don’t tell me that Ivan Julian played that solo…pretty please… :o

Damn… we just keep losing 'em.

Perhaps someone here might know. Was he touring recently as a member of the re-formed Rocket From The Tombs?

Quine was amazing. I heard about this on monday. “Love comes in spurts” is one of the consummate punk songs, but don’t forget his great work with Tom Waits (on “rain dogs”), and John Zorn. Also, he did great guitar work on the “painted desert” album with Ikue Mori.

No, that’s Richard Lloyd of Television (who are touring right now I believe). That RFTT reunion was awesome! Old guy punks rock! 'Specialy Quine. He was this history teacher looking guy who always wore dress shirts and sports coats while tearing up some of the nastiest solos this side of Johhny Thunders. They don’t make guitar players like that anymore. My all time favorite solo is the one Quine rips up on the 7" version of Blank Generation.
