"Rise of the Guardians" (possible unboxed spoilers)

Saw this last night (courtesy of another free prescreening through spouse’s work). I’d been looking forward to it–the previews looked intriguing and I liked the look of the characters, so getting to see it a little early was a nice treat. (I have not read the books it was based on, btw).

Verdict: I liked it a lot. The animation was great, and for once the 3D actually enhanced it. Loved the characters (especially Jack, Pitch, North, and Baby Tooth) and the plot moved along at a nice brisk pace with a good combination of wild action and some touching moments. There were a lot of kids at the screening and they seemed to like it, though I noticed parents taking some of the younger ones out when they got scared. I’d say it would be a good movie for kids 6 or so and older, but there are some spots that might be a little scary for the really little ones.

Anyone else planning to see it (or already have)? I’ll be interested to hear what others think of it.

The wife and I really want to see this one, it looks gorgeous and not too kiddy. We are expecting so we’re seeing as many movies as we can while we are still able.

Jack Frost looks disturbingly like Joffrey from Game of Thrones. I don’t know if I’m going to be able to get past that.

I thought he looked like in a few more years he’s going to grow up and be Sephiroth.

This added to my enjoyment of the movie.

Pitch reminded me of a better looking version of Voldemort, especially with his nightmares that travelled like the Dementors (and the evil Potter wizards).

Whenever I see a commercial for this movie, I’m befuddled by how generic the name sounds.

When I heard the title, I thought of “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole”, a completely unrelated animated film from 2010. And the commercials for this new movie make it sound really awful, like the sort of thing that’s attempting to be hip and funny but doesn’t quite work. So I’m surprised that the OP liked it, although I haven’t seen it.

That, plus “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines”. With a smattering of “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” on the side.

It’s currently sitting at 76% on Rotten Tomatoes, so clearly I wasn’t the only one who liked it. It’s not high art, I’ll admit, but I thought it was a fun film.

I really enjoyed it. The graphics were stunning, the 3D the best I’ve seen in a long time. The plot was the weakest point for me, but overall I really enjoyed it.

I’m definietlly going to see this, with or without my bf’s 8 year old

Ever since the commercials started playing in regular rotation, I find myself constantly taunting my cat with the line “I’m a bunny”.

Saw it with my boys today (9 and 6) and we all loved it. I thought it dragged a bit in the middle, but the ending was really good. Animation was great, as was the 3D. Plot wasn’t spectacular, but I thought they did a decent job of keeping you wondering about Jack’s past. The kids walked out saying they can’t wait to see it again.

Lil’ Miss Sous-Chef and I saw it over the weekend. She declared it her favorite movie ever (Lil’ Miss Sous-Chef has a tendency to hyperbole); I thought it was very good but not “Toy Story” good. The animation was excellent, and the character design was very original, but the story was a little fill-in-the-blanks.

I fell asleep during much of the first half, a very rare occurrence for me. It was ok. The kids liked it. Mrs. Eye was struck by how much it lifted from Pratchett’s Hogfather.

I took the kids yesterday and for the first time since going to 3D movies the screen was bright enough to not turn to mud when I put on the glasses. So props to you Crowfoot Cinemas.

We all enjoyed it. I too thought the plot was paint by numbers. And yes, I know you can render individual eyebrow hairs, but do we really need to see that? But overall it was a good afternoon out.

I have a feeling the books will be coming into the home. We’ll arm wrestle to see who gets at them first.

Loved the Santa Tattoos.

ETA: I just bumped a zombie thread. I did not realize that. (oops)
