Okay, let’s start fresh. We now have more info than we had when the OP went up. So, I ask you, given all that you’ve taken in to days, what do you think actually happened?
And we all know that Glenn Beck raped and murdered… Oh, well…
Did he?
How can you be 100% sure? You weren’t there. Isn’t it possible that at least one of the lynchings was based on non-racial retaliation? Or maybe the history books lied. Maybe it was a misunderstanding. Maybe we are in the Matrix and none of this is real. Maybe you are having a very elaborate dream right now and when you wake up you will be in a race-free environment where racism has never happened. Maybe you just haven’t heard a valid non-racist argument for why lynchings were not racist.
Unless you can be 100% sure that none of these are true, you can not call the lynchings racist. This is your standard, not mine.
And I’m not saying you are racist. I’m saying you need to relax the Strongarm Doctrine and free yourself from this 100% nonsense. Just evaluate events on their known (and reasonably assumed) merits like the rest of us humans.
(continuing the meme because I’m sick of this endless non-discussion) We may never know for sure. All I know is that he hasn’t denied it.
Mods, as the OP I suggest this thread be closed because it entered the realm of terminal stupidity several pages ago, which was the last time it went anywhere.
No it’s not.
That’s not my doctrine.
Sure, we could argue that, as you did in your strawman, that even a lynching isn’t 100%, but only 99.99999%. I have no problem with going ahead and declaring the 99.99999% to be close enough to 100%.
But the “animals” incident isn’t 99.99999%. It’s much lower. Calling someone an animal and throwing peanuts at them is not hanging them from a tree in Alabama.
I think this thread is fine. You shouldn’t close a thread just because you don’t like someone’s argument.
If you are sick of this endless non-discussion, stop posting.
Well, I’d doubt it ever happened and in the interests of fairness, I’d defend them if they did make a motion to kill all negroes. Since we on the left reject Objectivism, we are normative ethical relativists, we hold all opinions to be equally true. After all, now that we have new information from Alice Cooper, we know that sometimes when people say they’re going to kill a large group of people, they do not mean they will literally kill a large group of people. They only want to make an impression on them, so perhaps the Republicans plan a new federal stimulus where all negroes are exposed to excellent performances.
As for the burning cross, it could simply be symbolic of a forest fire or the war in Afghanistan.
I’d strongly repudiate anyone that’d jump to the conclusion that these signified racism without the totality of facts. After all, I want to preserve my credulousness. Or credibility, I forget which.
Of course you would. Most people would.
Tell Andie, who starts with the assumption that this would be true. That shows how his/her bias is clouding his/her judgment.
What do you mean, “we,” (white man)?
So you think all that makes you more credible, do you?
Credibility is about BOTH calling out racism when it’s obvious AND reserving judgment when there is doubt. If you confuse the two, thats’ you, not me.
Nice try though.
It’s just that I feel parental responsibility for the thread and check in now and then to see if we have any more information about the perpetrators of this (in all probability) racist outrage, but part of parental love is knowing when to pull the plug.
Pull the plug.
Was watching Beloved the other night and there was a pretty poignant scene where the only word a slaver uses after observing the aftermath of Oprah killing her kids is “animal”. Just reminded me of this thread.
Yep. That word has a long sad tradition. And it’s pretty frightening that some would mock the use of the word with inanimate childrens toys. It just shows how insensitive people are just to make a point.
But it is not ALWAYS racist.
Is “Animal” the muppet character (a character, not a toy) racist by virtue of his name?
Yes or no?
If you can’t simply say yes, or no, please don’t bother to answer.
Lance just stop being an ahole.
I asked you not to answer if you can’t give a straight answer. The fact that you have to violate forum rules in avoiding the answer says alot.
