Hey, Black Flag is eligible this year! It’s only a matter of time now…
Nah, I wanna see the Butthole Surfers get in!
Queen was rightfully inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2001.

As you might guess from my username, I’m a big Clash fan.
There is almost universal agreeance (heh, heh) that the Clash were HUGELY influential … way beyond the 16+ sides of vinyl that they put out in their all-too-brief existence.
And to say that the Clash were unmusical? It is to laugh.
Mick Jones was a superb musical arranger and Joe Strummer was a master lryscist (sp?). I’ll grant you that Paul was not a great bass player, but he was far from incompetent a la Sid Vicious. But it was Topper Headon’s great flexibility in drumming styles that allowed the Clash to attempt (and for the most part succeed in) several different musical styles:
punk
jazz
srtaight rock ‘n’ roll
blues
hip-hop
rap
rockabilly
ska
reggae
And add to that list gospel music and even bubblegum pop. (If you want cites, I’ll be glad to give out song titles in each style, but that would be too excessive, I think.)
I look at that list, and I am in awe of their talent. The Clash did it all. And dozens and dozens of r ‘n’ r bands doing interesting and intelligent music today were all influenced by the Clash.
Well, I’ve said enough.
Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Why the hell is Lynyrd Skynyrd not in the Hall of Fame?
(And anybody who thinks The Clash don’t belong needs a noggin floggin’. Costello is a closer call.)
What is it with Rush fans and, well, being such fans? You mention Rush and it is like teenie-boppers and the fucking Beatles or something. “Oh, Rush, my heart pumps blood to my stiffened genetalia in exact timing with their drums!” Feh. They’re a decent band.
Never understood music-worship.
Perhaps it is the same with us Blind Melon fans. I don’t like Rush personally, but I try not to speak out against others’ music (even as much as I hate Metallica, I try to keep quiet unless someone asks…of course, not really appliable to this case)…
What happens is that the fans of such “cult” bands (I say cult simply because one half of society sees their music as not being socially acceptable…and the other half of society sees their music as being comparable to the talent of Mozart) takes a beating from the people who know the music (because it is popular).
In my case, it has to be that bee girl song from which Blind Melon got so much “notoriety”. If that is the only Bline Melon song a person has ever heard…and he is forced to hear it over and over through a period that seems like eternity…he is probably going to be pretty annoyed.
When it comes to Rush, I can see how the singer’s voice can grate on a person’s nerves. I don’t find it particularly appealing, myself, though I will admit the man has some talent. However, I will also say that Rush is a very competent (if not downright awesome) live act. I simply do not like their songs.
Do they belong in the Rock and Roll hall? I guess I wouldn’t keep them out.
I have to wonder what will happen in a few years when bands like Motley Crue, Ratt, Iron Maiden, Testament, etc become eligible. One cannot deny the influence these bands had on Rock music. Unfortunately, most of their music has not lasted the “test of time” and the movement they started has largely died out (though hair metal seems to be making a resurgance in this area). In the case of Testament, they helped to start a movement that is still going strong. Most metal-heads I know regard Testament with highest esteem.
Dunno, their work just “resonates with my sensibilities” is the best way I can put it.
And please don’t include me in the “rabid fan” camp. Anymore at least. I love their work, but it’s not the be-all end-all of rock ‘n’ roll, just a rather quirky corner of it.
Besides, if Rush fans didn’t throw their enthusiasm into supporting three musical geeks from Canada, what do you think we’d give our mindless worship to? Politics? Religion? Imagine the horror!
Heart, Chicago, Journey, Styx, Moody Blues should be in the R/R HOF.
forgot one Foreigner.
If Foreiger ever makes into the HoF, then Bad Company, Thin Lizzy, Foghat, BTO, and Peter Frampton should be there too.
Seems as though we should start up a “Great Debates” thread somewhere along the lines of: Rush: God-like or Dog-Shit?. Even though I’m Canadian, you can put me firmly in the second camp. Still putting out great albums?! When did they ever put out a good album? I mean, I was able at one time to sit through 2112 without squirming too much, but really, that voice… yetch! The pretentious art rock… ho hum. The Philosophy 101 (or worse) level lyrics (“By-Tor and the Snow Dog Square for battle, let the fray begin”)… ha! ha!
But, then again, taste (or lack of it) is pretty inexplicable.
Anyway, for the record:
Black Sabbath - It’s a travesty… a travesty I tells you… what kind of a Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame wouldn’t have Black Sabbath in it? Not my kind of Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame
The Clash - Great band… Hall of Fame material for sure… at least up until Combat Rock
Elvis Costello - For sure in the Hall of Fame… hell, I’d even induct Joe Jackson for about half the reasons of EC.
AC/DC - should get in for “You Shook Me All Night Long” alone.
The Police - Ahh fuck, whatever… I guess they should be in… maybe
But if you want to talk serious fucking mistake… neither The Stooges or Iggy Pop are in the Hall!!!. WTF!!!
Sorry, I think I just fainted.
And I’m handled after a Styx character.
But I’d put Sabbath in. Just to see Ozzy make the acceptance speech. That’d be killer.
I can’t see the Crue and the other early 80s hair metal bands making it. They just didn’t have the longevity. And I really liked them at the time. Van Halen, yes…but the others just didn’t make it.
See, now we’re talking! Especially since you even added Foreigner one post later.
Don’t worry about Jonathan Chance, either. He’s just a traitor to his name.
No Genesis? They’re nuts.
Nor Deep Purple?
No ‘? and the Mysterians’?
All of 'em are small fries when compared to Air Supply. I mean, really, who doesn’t love Air Supply?

One word:
Tull
What you get when you cross “tug” with “pull”?
