I don’t have a problem with AC/DC getting in the R/R HOF, and Steven Tyler doing the honors inducting them, but ? Why does he have to sing along with AC/DC on “You Shook Me All Night Long”, it’s not like the singer (name escapes me - not Bon Scott) is dead?, Shut Your Big/Fat Pie Hole and let AC/DC rock the house.
Oh and Sting, we know you and The Police haven’t played in 18 years, just go on stage, play and keep the Ego(s) in check.
I’ve been hearing snippets/ads on the radio, when VH1 will be airing the show.
Queens of the Stone Age? They are pussies! HEAVY METAL PUSSIES!
One of the members of QOTSA assaulted and crippled a friend of mine a few years ago and only managed to keep his psycho crackhead junky ass out of jail by agreeing to pay a bunch of restitution money for my friend’s medical bills, lost wages, etc. But last I heard he still hadn’t bothered to pay, even though he’s a big rock star now. Too bad I can’t go see Turbonegro without paying money to QOTSA at the same time.
Costello freely admits that he made the attributed statement about Ray Charles. He’s further stated repeatedly that he did it solely to get a rise out of folks, as his whole stage persona at the time was the angry young man full of vitriol. During that period, he would sometimes only play 20 minute concerts and refuse to do encores. When he was on SNL during that period, he switched one of his songs right on stage, throwing off the show’s timing and sending out a scathing attack on mainstream radio, a big part of NBC’s business. Anything to piss people off. Even taking on the moniker of Elvis was intended to lance a sacred cow.
In the interval between then and now, he’s expressed nothing but remorse and embarassment for his actions at the time. He’s stated consistently since that time that he’s not a racist and every interview I’ve read suggests to me that he’s telling the truth.
As far as getting his clock cleaned by a “girl”, what the fuck’s so surprising about that? I’ve met some pretty strong and athletic women in my time, and it doesn’t seem wise to question someone’s fighting prowess simply because they don’t have a penis.
Then there’s your statement about mediocre songwriting. That’s an opinion, and fair enough, but I find it funny that you would quote David Lee Roth, author of musical masterpieces such as “Hot For Teacher”.
In the OP, it was suggested that Costello is without artistic merit. That’s just ludicrous. The man has an immense catalog of very literate songs in a wide range of styles.
There’s been a few bands mentioned in this thread that I have no use for, as they appeal not at all to my taste. But each and every one of them possesses artistic merit. To suggest otherwise is to suggest that if something is not to your liking, it’s essentially without worth. True to you perhaps, but false to a great many others.
It’s probably because of “Freebird”
And speaking of Sting and The Police…
They were a very influental band. I know many musicians who were influenced by the innovative guitar sounds and by Stewart Copelands amazing drumming (even though I can’t stand him as a person). And Sting is a gifted songwriter IMO, although I’m sure some of you disagree. But he is still writing hits many years after the Police disbanded. Like him or not, he is doing something right or he wouldn’t still be around. Personally, I find him one of the most interesting writers around, never afraid to take chances and stir things up a bit by going in a different direction. Hell, after The Police broke up, the first thing he did was surround himself with legit jazz musicians (Dream of the Blue Turtles) and took his music in an entirely different direction and made it work.
The Police were influential to many, had their own sound, and were successful for quite a few years. In my eyes, that makes them far more worthy than these obscure bands that some of you are throwing around. C’mon, will anybody even know who these people were in 10 years.
And for many of these same reasons, I think Rush deserves to be there too, although, sorry coldie, I can’t really hang with Geddy’s voice either.
