Looking at other pictures, he still seems to have a good head of hair. My guess would be that he needed to shave his head for a role and either they’re still filming or his hair hasn’t grown back yet. No reason to buy a good wig if you just need it for a month or two.
I guessing that he’s had some serious medical problem … cancer maybe? I’ve seen some of his Sundance Channel appearances over the past couple years where he’s actually worn a scarf over his head. If this is true I give him some extra credit for not making his “heroic struggle against a terrible disease” into headline news story.

No, I’m saying it may still be his own hair, growing out of his head, but dyed so it’s not white.
Why the need to dye it? He’s only 79.
I saw the same interview. His hair did look odd, but what I really noticed was his cheeks. It looked like he had on rouge.
Regarding the movie he was promoting, man I just don’t care about that issue and have no desire to see it, in spite of the lovely Cate Blanchett.
