Gah. Abortion can and often is a not very pleasant topic to debate. Yet there are plenty of folks on all sides of the issue who can discuss the topic here with some semblance of reason, maybe even a sense of humor once in awhile. robertliguori, apparently, ain’t one of 'em.
I haven’t really followed his posting in other threads, so I don’t know if this is a consistent pattern of behavior. But Christ…throwing in an accusation of ad hominum attacks, and suggesting that his weight will be fair game for me?
Am I standing on asphalt? On a playground? Outside an elementary school ? Listening to some 8 year old twerp about to take his marbles and go home?
B) In respons to his comments about how his previous opinions on related issues have no bearing on his current opinions on issues:
bwah-ha-ha-ha…
That’d be like SweatWilly arguing that he wants to discuss the Middle East situation and we should ignore his hatred of Jews or Fatherjohn wanting to discuss C.A.F.E. regulation given his views on SUVs.
Just another example of people who see something in the science column of the paper, but have absolutly no understand of what the science means. I’m not sure if this applies to him, or to the abortion arguement he’s talking about.
Yay, my first Pit thread. Alright, in order
Beagledave: we disagree on abortion. I’ll keep it out of this thread as much as possible, since it’s about me. Next orff: please explain to me what my personal (and unpopular) beliefs about what constitutes humanity have to do with the relationship between cancer cells and zygote cells? It looked to me like a hijack about my personal beliefs, designed to make me look like a Baby-Killing Monster!™. If you had a reason for bringing it up, please tell me.
And my real name is Robert Liguori. I have graduated High school with a 3.76 GPA, am about to begin attending Virginia Tech, a damn fine university and I got a 5 on the A.P. Biology exam. And I don’t sniff paint thinner.
Fenris: It don’t. Read beagledave’s section, please.
CRorex: Dammit, according to the College Board, I know a thing or two about biology. But thanks for posting, anyway.
No objections here. The problem is that I learned biology differently than you.
From that cite. I didn’t learn that species clause. I would posit that since all parasites behave like z-e-fs, they should be classified as honorary parasites, but I don’t want to sully the clear sparkling waters of a thread devoted to me with the silt and muck of another abortion debate.
I understand your motivation in posting these little tidbits, given the paint-thinner-sniffing crack that headlines this thread. However (and no particular offense intended), I don’t really think you’re in a good position to engage in academic-credential dicksize wars. Particularly in light of the fact that there are a number of people that post here that have advanced degrees in the biological sciences. Which is not to say that amateurs with a healthy interest in science don’t have a lot of interesting knowledge and insight, just that I think that, if you feel the need to establish yourself, quoting your AP exam score was probably not the best way to do so.
No offense robertliguori, but getting a 5 on your A.P. bio exam and graduating high school with a 3.76 is all well and good, but it doesn’t mean you know squat about anything. Spouting grades and alma maters will not get you very far here, and is certainly no way to win an argument (“I got good grades in high school, so listen to me!”).
From what I’ve been told, high school Biology is pretty much all crap anyhow. I’ve heard numerous people complain about having to “un-teach” the totally oversimplified picture that the average high school student gets taught.
Damn, not sure how to answer this one. On the other hand, Fenris got it right with his examples of FatherJohn and SweetWilly. On the other hand…ahem…I was not responding to your OP about cancer cells and zygotes!!! Now I mentioned this in a reply to you in that debate, but apparently you skimmed over that.
Let’s try it again, shall we? robertliguori asks why more pro choice folks do not join in the debate. He points out that he was THE ONLY ONE debating a gang of pro life folks. Are ya following me so far there robert?
O.K. Notice how that question of yours has NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR OP?
Still following me there?
Notice that my post that mentions infanticide is a DIRECT answer to your question about pro choice participation? Notice that my post has NOTHING to do directly with your OP, but instead to your whining about pro choice participation?
ERGO, I did not hijack yer thread.
ERGO, I responded to your whining about the lack of pro choice participation.
Got it?
BTW, apparently all yer book learnin’ didn’t clue ya in to what makes up an ad hominem attack, jackass.
You posted that you wanted more pro choice people to post in your thread. You mentioned that you were the only pro choice poster valiantly engaged against several pro life folks. I offered up a reason as to why pro choice folks might not be rushing to join you. The reason has to do with the “quality” of your arguments that you had laid out earlier. That ain’t an ad hominem attack, ya doofus. It may or may not be the actual reason why you lacked pro choice folks in your corner (although I suspect BlackKnight seemed to be suggesting a similar thing), but it is a reasoned guess as to why even pro choice folks seem to be keeping a bit of distance from your logic.
I have not attacked your character. I have not attacked your circumstances or actions. I attacked your line of reasoning. Only a true ass equates that with a mention of one’s weight.
I’ll leave comments on your high school accomplishments to other posters.
As someone who regularly uses and enjoys the scent of My Beloved Paint Thinner, I was offended by indirectly being compared to whoever the flaming blue hootie this goober is.
And I got a 4.22 in high school, and I wasn’t even trying, so nyeh.
I ignored the thread in GD because I figured everybody would take it for what it was and let it die.
I just can’t do it any more.
robertliguori, I am just going to note that several posters in that thread tried to point out to you that a fetus is an example of a biological process working properly, and that a tumor (benign or malignant - it doesn’t matter either way) is an abberation.
That’s it, end of discussion. There are many ways to intelligently discuss the abortion question, but you have an uncanny ability to avoid all of them.
Sticking your fingers in your ears and humming is not a valid method of debate.
beagledave’s speculation about why other pro -choice posters haven’t flocked to that thread is spot on, certainly in my case. And, actually, some have posted, suggesting what Exgineer has mentioned here.
Gollyjeewillikers, Robert. I graduated high school with a 3.79 G.P.A., I also scored a 5 on my A.P Bio test, I attended Georgetown University, which everyone knows is a much better school than Virginia Tech, and during my time there I earned 22 science credits, including 9 in biology. So, self-evidently, I’m smarter than you are.
Can we move on?
Robert, arguments like yours damage the pro-choice cause. They make it too easy for pro-lifers to dismiss pro-choicers as idiots.
We don’t need allies like you.
[winces]
Damn, I didn’t think of that. I apologise, beagledave. Thank you for taking the time to explain your reasoning. I retract my accusation of an ad hominem attack.
And yes, I know that there are many people here more smart and much more well-educated than me. I’m still no damn eight year old.
