Robin Trower

Halla-fuckin’-lulah I scored tickets for his Chicago show in June. I’m really bummed that I have to wait three and a half months.

So tell me…have any of you seen him? I want to hear your impressions.
(dang it…I have butterflies in my stomach already!!)

Yes, but not recently. He was headlining a bill with PFM, the band I went to see, so stayed for Trower. Probably Bridge of Sighs tour.
At the time I thought, another Hendrix wannabe. Plus he kept giving the finger to the crowd, don’t know what that was all about. There were some rowdies.
But you sound excited, so I hope it’s a great gig.
You asked!

Oh damn…you’re killing me! I think Bridge of Sighs is one of the great albums of the 70s. I hate to hear he’s a weird guy. I hope he mellowed out.

I remember riding around in my red Pinto listening to a lime green 8-track tape of Robin Trower Live.

I saw him in Detroit in the early 80s (Harpos, yeh!). From what I remember, he was absolutely amazing. Definitely an underrated guitarist.

Bridge of Sighs is a classic, a large part being the late James Dewar’s vocals…haunting.

My first live concert was during the Bridge Of Sighs tour. It was at Winterland, in San Francisco. IIRC, the opening band was T-Bone Burnett, then Humble Pie, then Robin Trower.

Hearing the opening chords of Day Of The Eagle (at that level of gain) was amazing.

Wow. I saw Humble Pie back in the day, too. Damn…concerts were good back then.

I just scoped out Trower’s website and he has a new album with Jack Bruce. I love that B.L.T. album, too.

One of my all-time favorite guitarists, and I agree with lost4life about the fantastic Jimmy Dewar.

The only time I got to see Trower live was in 1976, second on the bill to Jethro Tull at a huge stadium gig in San Diego (also on the bill were Rory Gallagher and Starcastle). The thing I remember most was that long, long sustained feedback note in “Daydream,” a trick that can also be heard on the Live album.

I saw him open for Peter Frampton in 1994. I remember it was pretty good, but at the time I had no idea who he was, and neither did the guy I went with. It became a running gag with us: “Who the hell is Robin Trower?”

This just makes me feel old. :frowning:

In that vein, when I caught that gig, it was with the memory of him as Procol sideman. He had a unique style with them, maybe not stellar- but hearing him almost a decade later with NONE of that probably soured the experience.
So, yeah, tempis fuggit.
