Got to see a sneak preview of this today, courtesy of the spouse’s job at Apple. I think it’s going to be in limited release for awhile, but if you get a chance to see it, I recommend it. It’s a sweet, funny movie, with Frank Langella as an aging cat burglar who’s just beginning to succumb to dementia, his two well-meaning but busy adult children, and a robot with more personality than half of Hollywood.
This opens in Chicago tomorrow (playing at the Landmark and Century/CineArts in Evanston) and I will be seeing it, thanks. I won’t watch the trailer first.
All I meant by “no spoilers” was that I wasn’t posting any, since I got to see the movie early. Maybe a mod could change the title to “…(boxed spoilers)”? Thanks!
I really enjoyed it! There were some laugh out loud moments. Robot with the black sweater tied around him killed me. As well as when Robot and Mr. Darcy talked at the party.
One thing I did not see coming was when Frank went to Jennifer’s office and saw the pictures and realized she was his ex-wife. That got to me.
Peter Sarsgaard was really good as Robot’s voice. And I really want a Robot of my own to help around the house.
I thought Susan (Jennifer) was the hot redhead he said he wanted to impress with the casino hotel heist, not an ex-wife or mother of the kids. There was only one picture of them together and there was none of Jennifer at his home.
I really loved this idea. The background is near future, we still drive cars, eat cereal, but phone calls are video and we have simple but smart, useful robots.
Favorite sequence was:
After Robot is being harrassed by the little kids and says, “Please do not molest me,” Frank teaches him to say, “Initialize self-destruct sequence, and count down from ten.” Then Robot uses it against the cops, or “the man”.
I also loved Liv Tyler as the post-modern/modern hippie in favor of human contact over bots.
Saw this last night & LOVED IT! I saw it with my mother & told her that we needed to pick up her robot on the way home. Seriously, she could use one to clean up, get her on a routine, and cook healthy food.
At 80 she keeps teenager hours and almost eats like one.
