Rock Around The Clock/Rock and Roll

In the correction at the bottom of the story of Rock and Roll, it mentions that some of the Beatles have recorded RocK Around The Clock. I believe that this is incorrect. They MAY have played it in the Cavern Days, on one knows for sure, but I do not believe any of them have actually reacorded the song.

I assume you’re referring to this column, which says “[Rock Around the Clock] has been recorded over 500 times by other artists such as Chubby Checker, Mae West, Pat Boone, and several of the Beatles.” Cecil isn’t saying the group recorded RATC but rather that its individual members did, presumably after the group broke up.

I’ve emailed John Marshall, “The King of Collectible Recoreds”, to see if any of them did indeed record the song.

Although I think it’s likely to assume that the Beatles would have been performing the song in their repertoire in their “growing up” period in Liverpool and Hamburg, I haven’t found any evidence that they ever recorded it.

The closest thing I could find is that Harry Nillson sang a cover of it on his album “Pussy Cats,” which was produced by John Lennon and Ringo Starr did lend vocals to that track. A far cry from “The Beatles” no matter how you look at it.

Mr. Marshall thinks John might have recorded it on his Roots album but he’s not sure. He’s pointed me toward a Beatles trivia geek.

Side question: I have a partial recording (from radio) of Rock around the clock at three-four time beat (waltz time) sung by a British. Real weird and funny. By any chance, does anybody know the artist(s) ? Would appreciate.

Well, the geek doesn’t know either. Looks like the OP found a mistake!

It looks like the Beatles have recorded Rock Around the Clock as well as See Ya Later Alligator. According to the All Music Guide (www.allmusic.com) these are both on the 1984 Complete Beatles video.

I have that video. It is a documentary that features the Beatles in context and thus features — amongst other 50’s rockers — Bill Haley and the Comets. It is their recording included in that video.

“Their” referring to Bill Haley and the Comets, that is. Not the Beatles.

Also according to All Music, there appear to be over 300 versions and variations of Rock Around the Clock, so the recorded over 500 times may be a reasonable number.

In addition, I don’t think it was Cecil making the statement, it was the composer of the song Jimmy DeKnight.

I am fairly certain that I have this video at home, so I’ll look for it tonight and post whether these songs are on it and it is the Beatles performing them.

Ah, yes. Didn’t catch that. I wonder if Cecil will add a response.

OK, so I thought I had this video at home - couldn’t find it though. I vaguely remember seeing it and think that “Hey you!” is right, it had some historic footage from other groups than the Beatles.

“Several” of The Beatles?!

Maybe Mr. DeKnight was counting Pete?

I also looked up (www.allmusic.com) Pete Best, Stu Sutcliffe, and Billy Preston (I know, a reach) and none of them has recorded Rock Around the Clock.

Then I got to thinking about the collaborations done by the Beatles and I hit gold - Harry Nilsson recorded it in 1974 on the Pussy Cats album - produced by John Lennon and Ringo contributed.

This must have been what DeKnight was talking about.

To answer Gynmopithys question from earlier, there is a version listed in the All Music Guide by Fats and the Cats that is done in polka style, also Jimmy Sturr recorded a polka version of Rock Around the Clock. This at least gives you a starting place.

Thanks, Rocket!
