Inspired by the recent “Rock’n’Rollers who never screwed groupies” thread, I would like to make a similar query :
What rock stars have avoided alcohol and/or drugs?

Gene Simmons and Dee Snider, for starters.
Frank Zappa. He died young anyway.
I’m gonna guess Cat Stevens because he’s muslim and all.
Britney Spears. Plus, she’s a virgin.
What?
What indeed
Everybody knows she’s not a rock star
In DMC’s autobiography, he says that of all the rap groups he toured with, Will Smith was the one guy that he never saw doing any drugs.
Not rock stars but they act like them - Penn & Teller.
I’d always heard that Ted Nugent never touched the stuff.
Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) and Robert Fripp (King Crimson) have always been firmly anti-drugs. Anderson has been known to berate the audience for smoking their “fucking marijuana” while he was singing.
Ian Anderson. I don’t know that he’s never done drugs, but certainly not on tour. From what I’ve heard he views music as a business, acts accordingly, and expects the same from his fellow Tull members. At least one member was chased off in the early 70’s for excessive partying, IIRC
I used Edit! Mark this date on your calender.
What Biffy the Elephant Shrew said. I’ve heard Ian bitch out an audience for smoking regular cigs, pot really pissed him off.
Cranky old dude
Bruce Springsteen is another anti-druggie
This may be some false memory but I think there was one of those Biographies on VH1 about him and I think they said he never did drugs but did have a problem with alcohol but has been clean for quite some time now.
I also thought Alice Cooper stayed away from all that too. I could be wrong.
I think the Fugazi guys are all straightedge.
That’s my understanding too. I remember seeing them about a hundred years ago in my youth and they were pretty adament about people not getting f*$ked up at the show.
Great show by the way.
A hundred years ago in your youth? I feel old. I had to look these guys up, as I’d never heard of them before. Their Wikipedia entry says they had an international following by the late 1980s; I was in Thailand by then, but I guess they’d not made it here.
(hijack)
Last time I saw Jethro Tull, a few years ago, as soon as the lights went down, the guy in the seat in front of me started fumbling for his smuggled-in baggie, and soon the air around him was full of the familiar odor…
…of a peanut butter sandwich. Times have changed!
It sure feels like a hundred years.
My cousin, the rabid Madonna fan, tells me that once she started getting famous hasn’t touched any drugs because she’s such a control freak. I have nothing to substantiate that claim, however.
Alice Cooper was reportedly not into drugs, but he was an alcoholic for a long time. His album “From The Inside” is based on when he committed himself to a mental hospital to detox. He’s been sober since then, apparently.
Re: Nugent
That’s what I remember too, but don’t even let him get anywhere near the no boinkin’ groupies thread.
