**RocknRolla **opened wide in the US this past Friday and I saw it yesterday and didn’t see a thread here so I thought I’d start one. I really liked it. I thought it was a lot of fun and funny and with good characters and action. I say this as someone who has seen **Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels **and **Snatch **and liked both movies and hasn’t seen any other Guy Ritchie films.
Everyone was well cast and did really well, especially Tom Wilkinson as the crime boss and Toby Kebbell as the rock and roll junkie. Tom Wilkinson especially impressed me in that he went from the crime boss who seemed like he was all powerful and that no one could mess with him, to a beaten man in a wheelchair being fed to crawfish.
The story was pretty good too; it had the twists and turns that are expected of most modern crime movies, but they connected and it wasn’t twisty to the point of ridiculousness. It also had a good mix of laugh out loud funny parts and violent/dramatic parts. One of my favorite parts was probably when Gerard Butler was running away from a huge Russian gangster like a typical foot chase scene, but then he looks back and the gangster is completely out of breath and just can not run any more and Butler’s laughing at him. It was unexpected compared to how chase scenes are usually in movies and it made me laugh.
Overall, if you liked Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, I would definitely recommend **RocknRolla **to you. I would actually say **RocknRolla **is a little better. (Of course, if you really disliked **Lock Stock **then you can probably safely skip RocknRolla).
Also, if you do go, stay for the credits. They show more of the scene of Gerard Butler slow dancing with Tom Hardy. The slow dancing was another thing that made me laugh out loud in the theater.
I agree – this was a pretty fun movie. I loved the Thandie Newton part, at least in comparison to her role as Condoleeza Rice in “W”, which just really grated on me.
Another part of the movie that I really liked was
[spoiler]the sex scene, where once it became clear that they were going to do it, the movie went to “hyper” speed, flashed a bunch of images all within about a half a second, and returned to normal speed after it was over.
My wife and I just got home from seeing it. We liked it. We knew there wouldn’t be anything on tv tonight (just give me the final results, I don’t need to see the election results with only 53% of the precincts reporting).
ugh!
Anyway, about the movie. How fun! I too loved that part of the movie, jharvey; especially the way they ended with exaggerated sound of the zipper going up
Reviving this dead thread.
I just saw this movie last night and really like it. Like the OP said its pretty similer in tone and feel to Snatch and Lock, Stock, but i really liked those movies so that was fine with me. Has anybody else seen this? Its kinda shocking how small the thread is, it seems like a movie a lot of people on SDMB would like.
I just got it in the mail from Netflix yesterday, after watching Revolver over the weekend and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels last week. I’m really looking forward to seeing it, but I’ve got Dollhouse on loan from a friend that needs to be watched first.
Yeah. I saw it three years ago and loved it. Just never got around to seeing his other movies until seeing Lock, Stock… and remembering how much I loved Snatch.
Skip Revolver if you’ve not seen it, by the way. It was terrible.
Ritchie will never match* Lock, Stock* again. Everything else he’s done has been a pale imitation, with Revolver being the palest. (The one remake he did is a travesty beyond all mentionable proportions.)
